l R:PP.JALK This weekend the Rossland Minor Hockey AssociatiOD is sponsoring a Pee Wee "B" tournament at the arena. It will be a six-team round-robin tourney with teams from Trail, Nelson, Spokane, Castlegar and Grand Forks joining the Rossland club for a weekend of good hockey. The festivities started at 1 p.m. today with opening ceremonies and the first game to be televised on Channel 10. Geoff Chambers, head of the RMHA, passed along this information and stated that the Rossland group were hoping for a good turnout for the games and to give the Rossland people a good look at how our kids stack up against clubs from neighboring towns. Admission for the games is very reasonable, with a $2 pus letting one in for all the games. Youths and seniors will get all this for $1. So, come on out and see our fancy new ~ o c k work. It's all computerized so it will take some of our young computer whiz-kids to operate it. Seema we are really into the swing of things at the arena as the winter winds down. Last week it was the ice carnival with many local kids doing their thing and now we have another treat in store for us. Also at the arena this weekend will be the Legion's on~y 'spiel in the curling rink, so one can get a varied entertainment package at little or no cost. The Kokanee Derby Club held its annual meeting March 16 and elected a new slate of officers for the coming season, the president will be Chris Haynes and the executive will be composed of Kim Lafond, Brian Eyres and Mark and Jeff Martin. Membership tickets can be bad from executive members and tickets for the annual Derby Day raffle will be ready a while later. A good crowd was on band for the meeting. Some M members and 11 retirees heard Graham Jones give a talk on the problems the club bas bad with some residents of the Sheep Creek area. He explained that the people in the valley are not taking a shot at Derby Club members, they are only interested in keeping the creek clean. Towards this end, the wildlife offtclals will be monitoring the creek on Derby Day, taking samples of the water before and after to assure themselves that the festivities are not unduly spoiling the quality of the creek. The date for this year's will ,.... lt.ry MFI~ ,.~Jti.f derby is the last weekend in June. This year a memorial trophy will be struck to honor former club members who have died and it will go to the best deer taken by a retiree. Another new one will be in the Black bear category, a first for the growing club. This year, for the first time, the club will offer its services to assist in some way with the promotion of Rossland's Golden City Days. March 14, members of the Grand Forks Curling Club in the retiree category visited our Rossland retirees and a good day's curling fun was enjoyed. Only two of our rinks managed wins out of eight games played. Russ Broughton and Cy Dekuysscber were the successful skips, but this does not mean our guys were outclassed. Some real ding~long battles were waged right down to the last rock. A real bang-up lunch of cold meats, cheese, pickles and buns was enjoyed and a lot of good-natured banter was the order of the day. A lot of the Grand Forks curlers are from Christina Lake where quite a number of Rossland and Trail people have taken up residence upon retirement It makes for many pleasant tales of days when we all worked together on the hill Two games remain in ow: retirees' schedule for the '83-84 season and then w~ will bold our windUR banquet at the Legion afte1: a fine seasn. I would like to stress how much it ~ been enjoyed to help whil~ away many hours of ow: ample spare time. A number of our members changed their curling shoes for golf spikes on Monday and played ~ Birchbank course. From all reports it was a fine day and thoroughly enjoyed by those who made it. I bear the course is in excellent condition and am looking forward to my first trip out there. As spring approaches our thoughts turn to baseball; soccer and the summer sports, fishing for those who enjoy that. Those who like gardening, the time for planting · will soon be at hand and the lawn mower will be taken out of its hiding place to afford some added activity during the coming months to replace the snow shovel. So with those thoughts to keep you busy, I'll say, like I do most weeks, 'till next • time, then!'
