Westar sale nears completion

The sale of Westar Timber Ltd. is
in the final stages.

Westar’s Chairman of the Board
Larry Bell said Thursday that he is
hopeful.that an application for a
transfer of Tree Farm Licence No. 23
could be made to the B.C.
government “within a month.”

If the transfer is approved by the
government after a series of public
hearings, the Midway-based Pope
and Talbot Ltd. would take over
rights to TFL No. 23 and operate the
Castlegar mill.

According to Bell, negotiations
between Westar and Pope and Talbot
are in the final of three stages. He
said the two companies have already

agreed on Westar’s fixed assets and a
selling price, leaving only the paper
work to be approved. Bell said
lawyers from both companies are
currently looking over the purchase
documents.

“This has dragged on far too long
for the community and far too long
for Westar Timber,” Bell said from
company headquarters in Vancouver.
“You have three stages to a sale and
each of these stages has taken longer
than we expected.”

Bell would not comment on the
fate of the 280 workers who lost their
jobs when Westar shut down
operations in November.

Pope and Talbot president Abe
Friesen could not be reached for
comment, and his secretary declined

to answer any questions.

Castlegar Mayor Audrey Moore
used caution while addressing the
news of the impending sale. Instead,
she said she was more interested in
what. happens after Pope and Talbot
take over the site.

“The sooner Pope and Talbot and
Westar make the sale, the sooner
(Forest Minister Dan Miller) has to
make a decision on the TFL,” Moore
said.

A decision on the TFL could be
tricky, however. The licence extends
from Castlegar to north of
Revelstoke. Currently, there is a
petition out that calls for the licence
to be redrawn to exclude tree land in
and around Revelstoke.
