Students wrongly qualify VICTORIA (CP) — The provincial government has blamed an outside contractor for a computer foulup that resulted in 130 high school students wrongly qualifying for $1,000 scholarships. Dick Melville, Ministry of Edueation spokesman, said the government considers the contractor — the Edu. cational Research Institute of B.C. — responsible for the mistake and intends to de duct $13,000 from the fee paid the company for its ser vices. The minister (Jack Hein. rich) is very concerned about the matter,” Melville said. “He is adamant that it will not happen again.” Melville said 3,800 stu dents took the scholarship examination and 1,110 stu dents were later notified by mail that they had qualified for a scholarship. “However, there was a computer programming er ror which resulted in 130 students being included by mistake the list of schol arship winners, while others were left off the list,” Mel- ville said. When it was realized there were errors in the list, he said, a new corrected list was mailed out to the 1,110 per. sons who were properly qual: ified for scholarships. Melville said the 130 stu dents who each received the $1,000 scholarships by mis take will be allowed to keep the money. “We're not so hard up that we'd ask them to return the money,” he said. Audrey Sojonky, executive director of the Educational Research Institute of B.C., said Tuesday the institute's position is that all the mat ters relating to the issue are confidential student, says a former elemen- school Mary Hansen, 40, of Markham, Ont., has developed a method of using games to teach children. years ago, she was faced with a classroom of under-achieving inner city children, many of whom were labelled “impossible. “They seemed to be written off by everybody,” she said in an interview. “Nothing seemed to work for them.” Faced with this challenge, Hansen, who for 15 years has taught students at many levels from kindergarten to Grade 8, decided a new approach was necessary. HUMOR HELPS She began experimenting and found that the children responded well to a basic skills approach that involved games, zany humor — “I called one grammar game the hospital for sick sentences” -and lots of action and positive reinforcement. 3 “Much to everyone's surprise many of the children showed definite improvement in attitude. as well as academic achievement,” she said. With support from school principals, most of whom gave her the go-ahead to use her method rather than the standard curriculum, Hansen gontinued to use the technique during succeeding years. “Many parents who were concerned about the diffi culties their child was having became enthralled and started making the games at home to drilf times tables and spelling lists.” Last year, word of Hansen's method came to the attention of the Ontario Teachers’ Federation and she was urged to share her ideas in the form of a book. So she left her teaching positfep in June, established her own publishing company, That's The Way Learning Publications, and produced here first book, Joyful Learn in — Learning Games for Children Ages 4 to 12. “I believe learning should be fun, not dreary,” she said. “The primary grades I taught really liked the games.” Sony profits triple TOKYO (AP) — Sony Corp. says its profit in the third quarter more than trip- led from a year earlier, amid surging sales of all product lines and a decrease in inter- est expenses. The major Japanese electronics com pany said its profit in the three months ended July 31 rose to 19.25 billion yen, or $77.9 million (U.8.), from 6.17 billion yen in the third quar. ter of 1983. Spook! is a fun way to drill words. Darken a room and shine a flashlight on words — or numbers — written on hand-held cards or on a blackboard, Hansen suggests in the book. “The trick is for the child to read the word or number fact before the flashlight goes out, before the spook appears!” HAS 25 GAMES Other creative games among the 25 in the book are made with wooden blocks, coloring books, bits of colorful fabric, numbered peanuts and dolls clothes and are adaptable to many different age levels and subject matters. Hansen, who has specialized in helping children with learning difficulties, said that failure can start in Grade 1. “As early as age 7, children can be beaten by the system. They know when they're slotted into a certain category... which indicates a slower level of learning. “Parents can really encourage a child who is having difficulties, especially if they work with the teacher. I've seen wonderful things happen when parents get involved.” HAD PROBLEM Hansen said she did run into a problem several years ago when some of her pupils went home and told their parents that they were “playing games” in her class. “But once the parentsunderstood what I was doing, I was delighted to find they were all for it.” Hansen said that teachers today find themselves in competition with television and video games. “Children are exposed to so much information and a fast-changing world, we must be one step ahead all the time to keep up.” Joyful Learning can be obtained by writing to That's The Way Learning Publications, P.O.
