Her latest gem in a series of suspense in exotic places is Randal is invited by an old school friend to visit the remote Andaman Islands. What at first seems like a tropical paradise with a handsome “Adam” to complete the picture, soon turns into a nightmare place, with accidents and murder destroying the idyll. * 28 « Catherine Cookson has written yet another spell binding tale about England's north country called The Moth. It is 1913 and Robert Bradley has left his job in the shipyards to go and work with his stern god-fearing uncle in his carpentry shop. A violent confrontation forces him to leave and he finds work in the sadly run down estate of Foreshaw Park, belonging to the once wealthy Thorman family hidden Los Alamos on a mesa surrounded by Indian reservations and its the most secret installation of the } war. To it comes soldiers, roughnecks and scientists, including mathematician Anna Weiss with whom Joe falls | in love. . 6 © The vogue for books on India is still with us so interest in Out of India by Ruth Praver Jhabvala should be high. Author of the famous Heat and Dust, Jhabvala has selected short stories from her three decades of } writing. As a Ei , married to an Indian, who as led most of her adult life in India, she's in a good position to challenge her characters and her readers with the Pi of adjusti to the Indian way of life, and one is left wondering is life is more raw on that continent or does India reveal more clearly the way people everywhere act seemingly against their own best interests. * 6 * A rich, sprawling novel about Alaska is the latest product of Janet Dailey’s pen. The Great Alone begins with the love of a beautiful Aleut woman for a noble Cossack hunter, and from their union come seven generations of a proud breed of native Alaskans. Their story and the Alaska in which they make love and war, are woven into one of the great sagas of the American frontier. . 28 @ Kara Kush by Idris Shah is the first novel about the Afghan war written by an Afghan. An immediate best-seller in Britain, it also received great critical acclaim. Kara Kush means the Eagle and it's the name given toan A i d d Afghan engi who has organized small bands of Afghan patriots to fight back against the Soviet invaders who have wiped out villages, destroyed crops and looted mosques and museums. Millions have died and yet the Soviets with all their tanks and weapons cannot win. Kara Kush's resistance fighters struggle through snows and sandstorms, demoralising young Soviet conscripts who sell their guns for food. . 28 @ Elizabeth Peters’ many fans count on her for romantic mysteries as amusing as they're tantalizing. In Lion in the Valley the indomitable Amelia Peabody is back in Egypt for the 1895-6 season, accompanied by her They have a strange younger daughter, Millie, nicknamed The Moth. Robert becomes close to the elder daughter Agnes and their love struggles against the rigid social barriers of the time, with the weird flutterings of The Moth further complicating the plot. . 6: 6 The author of Gorky Park, Martin Cruz Smith, has written Stallion Gate, a dazzling successor to that best-selling novel and movie. In a New Mexico blizzard, four men cross a barbed wire fence at Stallion Gate to select the test site for the first atomic weapon. They are Oppenheimer, the physicist, Groves, the general, Fuchs, the spy and Sergeant Joe Pena, hero, informer, fighter, archeologist husband, iously erudite son and the family cat. Murder, mystery and mayhem ensue and Amelia cooly unmasks the master criminal as her delighted readers confidently expect her to. oe Another hot favorite, Philippa Carr, alias Victoris Holt, is back with Midsummer's Eve a lush, romantic novel set against the rocky shores of 19th century Cornwall and the Australian outback. The heroine jj receives a shattering shock one midsummer’s eve that causes her to distrust all men and she escapes to London where she decides to try one more. Her romance with him is dashed when scandal erupts and she sails to Australia. Recreation news There is still lots of sum- balls? CASTLEGAR CHEVRON 365-2912 ANNOUNCEMENT ‘ i_ = TOP VOLUNTEER . . . Marion Hurd of Cranbrook receives Canada Volunteer Health award from Health Minister Jake Epp. Hurd was one of only 31 recipients of the award this year. Hurd receives award A Cranbrook woman is one of 31 Canadians who recently received the Canada Volunteer Award from Health Minister Jake Epp. Marion Frances Hurd was nominated for the honor by the Kootenay Society for the Handicapped regional board “in ition of her di work in the Kootenays on behalf of people who live with a handicapping condition,” according to a prepared release. ‘The release says Hurd’s involvement began in the early 1970s with the KSH's Trail branch, where she was instru mental in developing the concept of employment for adults with disabilities. Under her leadership in 1977 a project by the Creston branch of the KSH to build a ceramics shop — complete with retail outlet and wide sales distribution — was developed where more than 30 people now are employed. From 1977 to 1982 Hurd served as regional director for the provincial body, British Columbians for Mentally Handi capped People. During this period she chaired the vocational services committee, which saw the beginning of ongoing efforts to make mentally handicapped people eligible for Workers Compensation benefits. She also laid important groundwork in shifting philosophy away from sheltered workshops towards sup ported employment models. During this period she was responsible for the imple- mentation of a work experience course for mentally handi- capped people at East Kootenay Community College. This led to the development of similar courses throughout the province. From 1980 — 1984, Hurd was responsible for the KSH Regional Training Project which trained volunteers and staff ghout the K in “normalization” princi- ples. She served as president of the regional board for three years during this period. Hurd chaired the board of management of the Endicott Centre in Creston from 1983 — 1986. “She was invaluable in facilitating the transfer of Kootenay residents from the Tranquille Institution in Kamloops to community homes throughout the Kootenays,” adds the prepared release. She presently chairs the management committee for the group home in Cranbrook where four people live. Hurd lives with her family in Cranbrook: husband Ted, who is district supervisor for the Ministry of Human Resources, and their two children, daughter, Kirsten, and son, Tyler. “Hurd is a teacher who, besides her tireless work on behalf of mentally handicapped people, also finds time to involve herself in her church and in her children’s hockey, skating, and Girl Guides,” concludes the release.
