Glen Backus Once again our children and youth, joined by not a few —— have headed back to is Pulpit & Pew St. Peter Lutheran Church not only very important for which any atheist can readily cite, but it is furthermore a si icant aspect of our s' ip un- der God. However, educating the mind alone is not the answer to life’s ills as some sociolo- gists seem to think. It was Teddy Roosevelt, former U.S. president, who very ind astating truth about the un- holy nature of the human heart. It was then that Jesus made a very harsh statement about the human heart by declaring: “For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil hts, sexual i theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, arrogance and folly. d out that mind without also educating the soul can only create “clever devils.” The real heart of education remains the education of the heart or the soul. Otherwise, we are merely dealing with what is still for the most part the exterior of the human sit- styled religious experts of that time, for being caught up in the tradition of: ceremonial isees and all the Jews do not eat poles they give their Ps i] hi All these evils come from in- side and make a man ‘un- clean.’” (Mark 7:21-23) Educating the mind only will enable us to carry out such evils in a more sophisti- cated way. Desperately needed is the renewing work of the Holy Spirit who alone can open our hearts and minds to the gra- cious presence of our Lord Je- sus Christ. Even with the presence of Christ within us we still are involved in a tremendous struggle as St. Paul himself had to admit: “For what I do is not the good I want to do!” ‘(Romans 7:19) holding to the tradition of the elders.” (Mark 7:3) There is a place for tradi- tion, to be sure. In this case, however, it had blinded the Pharisees to a far deeper truth. And that was the dev- d in education?
