Wallace, TRAIL DEPARTMEN The Lookout Mountain Mining going ahead with the development of the Joker. A crosscut is now being run from the bottom of the 80-foot shaft to tap the main ledge. About 30 feet is now done and it is expected the ledge will be encountered within 15 feet. When this is done it will give a depth of 125 feet below the surface. Several strong stringers assaying from $6 to $22 in gol have been recently crossed, all dipping towards the ledge. The char- acter ef the rock in which they are now working indicates the proximity of a large ore body. On the surface the Joker shows very strong iron capping assaying $12 in gold. The ledge is 125 feet wide and extends the full length of the claim between Bos- berry and Biorite Falls. The Joker is one of Trail’s high cards, The greater part of the 50,000 shares of treasury stock that has been sold is held by people living here. The owners are firm in the faith that they have a great mine and say that their ore is similar in character to that of the Le Roi, and they will therefore be able to haudle all their ore ata profitas it is now proposed to handle that of the great Le Roi. IT LOOKS LIKE A_ RING The Council Should Be Free to Act Independently. The following communication criti- cising the “straight ticket” is self ex- planatory. Editor Recorp—In yesterday morn- ing’s MinerI noticed that Lalonde’s committee have brought out a straight ticket. Now I fail to see what good there is going to accrue by this action. On the contrary harm to their cause will result. Why? Because if these nine alderinen yet elected they are so elected that they are pledged to act in harmony with their leader, (Lalorde of courge), and if hie Autocratic Majesty commands that they do this that and the other, no matter what it is going to cost the city they are bound to act in harmony and support him. Now. Mr. Editor, what is the use of a council if they are to be led along like dogs. Let Mr. Lalonde be sole commissioner doing without a council and give us an autocratic form of government at once. Tbe committee say that it would be disastrous to the city if the coun- cil were not in harmony with his ideas. Now he may have some quaint away back east ideas not suitable at all for this community. I think the boot is on the other leg; that is the conncil should be in harmony with the ideas ef the citizens, not Lalonde to Rossland and formed the Silver Leaf Mining company, capital stock 100,000 shares, par value $1.00 each. He has associated with him in the new company Frank Watson, George A. Fraser, Chas. D. Carpenter. all of Rossland. The Maple Leuf lies be- or any other mayor. Then it such was the case everything might have some chance of running smoothly, but surely uot in the other case. I say, do away with the straight ticket. It is nofusual on this side for municipal elections. Let the al- tween the E: and Arlins pected if elected to be pledged to fol- low Mr. ‘Lalonde implicitly. I have my o@i ideas on municipal affairs and would decliue to be , pledged te support these of any candidate for mayor and would not do so only when they agreed with me.” a J. H. ROBINSON DECLINES. Trying to Induce H. 8. Wallace to Take His Place on the Ticket, J, H. Robinson has refused to make the race for alderman upon the La- londe ticket and sayshe has no time to devote to the discharge: of the office. sat ; The Lalonde campaign committee have several ¢imes waited upon H. 8. Wallace und requested bim to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Mr. Robinson, Mr. Wallace was seen by a Recorp reporter and said that he had refused 'to accept the nomination from the hands of the committee, but if he was shown either by a public or a i signed by a sufficient number of prop- erty holders and business men to indi- cate that he could be elected that he would allow his name to be used. Just what action the commitvee will take isnot known but Mr. Wallace has surely acted wisely. ee ee THE COMING CONCERT. And Ballin Honor of the Great St. Patrick on Tuesday Evening.
