The auturin recreation rograms were also a suc- cess, Attribution of this suc- cess goes to a change in ad- vertising procedures — a brochure with a professional- ly printed cover being mailed to all residences. The Fitness Festival was held the second consecutive year with such events as a family barbeque, rock band, fireworks, frisbee competi- tion and fitness exhibition, Although the event didn’t receive overwhelming atten- dance, it did attract many people interested in improv- ing their own fitness levels. In August, a one-week hockey schoo] was held at the community complex. The school was provided by the recreational department, the Castlegar Minor Hockey As- sociation and Castlegar Ju- nior Rebel Hockey Club. The school was successful, with the recreation depart- ment summer staff co-ordin- ating and instructing it. In 1980 as well, public roller skating and changes in catering and concession op- erations were introduced into the complex, Roller skating was only held during part of July be- cause of problems in obtain- ing roller skates at the date required. Even so, 1,704 people made use of the roller skate rentals service. . In terms of concession op- erations, an individual has been hired to manage the concession in the complex. This service is being well re- ceived by complex users and is generating revenue, Also, arrangements have been made with three cater- ing firms to make use of the complex kitchen upon re- quest by groups booking the hall. This encourages users to make use of caterers who are familiar with the complex kitchen facilities. This is pro- ving to be a satisfactory method which is meeting most groups’ needs. Usage of the complex de- clined in 1980, with 198,905 persons making use of the facility. This was a decrease of 17,842 people. The ice arena received the highest usage with 73,759 users, a decrease of 19,216 from the previous year. The number of dry floor users also decreased. Conference rooms, the arts and crafts room and the’com- munity hall all showed an increase in usage. This is at- tributed to an increas in at- tendance at recreational pro- grams held in the complex and also to improved catering services, The old arena‘continues to ‘ial use from the public. It is scheduled for every evening and all day on. weekends from mid-October to the end of March. Tho facility'has been oper- ated at a low cost with a limited budget for capital expenditures, The arena is expected to operate until the end of the 1982-83 season, considering the extent of re- pairs which should be applied to this old building. The recreation department. was involved in a number of special projects during the past year. One project was the grow- ing need for an indoor swim- ming pool, This led to the co-ordination of meeting of potential user groups within the community. The meet-. ings’ purpose was to gather basic information of the fu- as ture construction of this facility. Information gather- ing is expected to continue in An increasing demand for — school facilities for evening recreational programs helped identify a need for an in- creased level of co-operation and understanding between the school board and rec: reation department. : The result is the beginning of a development of a-School Use Agreement. Also in terms of special projects, the involvement of Selkirk College in planning for an indoor swimming pool was one way in which the college physical: education and athletic department and the recreation department has achieved a higher level of co-operation.
