CASTLEGAR NEWS, Ti saay, December 21, ag Christmas Eve Song It's Christmas Eve. The earth is still, Shepherds rest on quiet hill. Sheep press close against the chill. And all creation waits, Instable dim a Virgin waits, Her unborn life, anticipates, Cows lie still within the gates, And all creation hopes. The Child is born, The angels sing. Shepherds rush to Bethlehem To sve the promised new-born King, Born in pain to die in pain, That I might die to live again, Abundant life now mine to gain. Let all creation praise! — Linda C. Hall New Slocan Council Members Sworn In Slocan Mayor Donald W. Hird was sworn in Dee. 4 after being elected by acclamation. He replaces former Mayor Adga Winje who did not seck _te-election, Ald, G. TED BRISTOW And all creation lauds! aay : al . lwonder how many chil- gren have been Mary or Joseph in some Christmas pageant this year. I wonder how many angel ...gastumes moms have had to make, or how many youngsters are struggling to learn the lines, “Unto you is born this day in the city of David..." I never get tired of seeing children act out the Christmas story. Yet you and I'are acting out the Christmas story every day of our lives, We, too, are actors in a Christmas pageant. Take the inn-keeper. He was a common-sense business: man. When Mary and Joseph + came late asking for a room, he 5 was not unkind to them. He { offered them his barn. : Of course, he could have : asked some of his guests to : double up, or he could have + Offered them his own room. But , Pou've got to be careful not to + get carried away by charity, { you know. When someone needs your help, by all means } doa little something for them, but let's not over-do it. And bevause the inn-keep- { ef was so sensible, so reason- : able, he turned away Christ i from his door, and didn’t even + know it. Are you ever the inn. + keeper in the’ Christmas pag- 2 eant of life? Am I? Then there were the shep- ‘ herds, They were hard-work- } ing, honest men. They were { probably too busy to go to } church every Sabbath — after { all, ranching is a seven-day-a- {week occupation. And yet, they < were, in their own way, deeply i religious men who sensed that teed was not satisfied with the : way the world was going, and lieved that some day God : Himself would come and change he world for the better. They were ready to hear ingels si Because their inds and hearts were not closed to spiritual realiti ; they listened to the angels’ } message. And because they * believed not only with their ¢ heads but with their hearts, : they did something about it. ‘hey went to Bethlehem, wor- hipped the child, told their riends and neighbors about it, ¢and gave thanks to God. + The shepherds represent + those whose religion is sincere. i++ Then there were the Wise { Men. They were seekers after ithe truth, and were willing to : {travel to the ends of the earth ito find the truth. If you're a secker, may y you : the led to the One Who said, “ eam the Truth.” {We can't forget Herod. We'd like to, but we can't. He qhad many babies killed in an faltempt to protect his own epride and power. There are still . speople like that, who destroy Swhatev er or whoever stands in tthe way of their personal ambi- stions, + The townspeople of Bethle- them were told about what had ? happened. Some of them prob- ably shrugged it off. Some of them found it an interesting topic of conversation for a few days. And some of them quietly found their way to the stable to see for themselves, and to see if they could do something for the new, young mother and child. Any town has a similar cross- section ‘of people. The angels? .They were those whose very life sings, whose very personality shines, whose very purpose is to bring glory to God. Occasionally, I have met those who, in this life, are the angels of God. So, I'm sure, have you. Finally, there were Mary and Joseph. A Child was born inte their care, and they loved that Child, protected Him, eared for Him in every way they could. A Child is born to us, every time life brings us a new re- sponsibility. Will we welcome and love our God-given respon- sibility? If so, we can be Mary and Joseph in the Christmas pageant of life. The whole story centres around the Child Himself. Will we make room for Jesus, wor- ship Him, sve Him a place in our lives? Or will we turn Him away? Which actor will we be in the Christmas pageant of life? fourth dnesday of each month with the meetings called to order at 7 p.m. Three Local UVic Degrees ‘Three men from the Castle: Rar area were among the 254 students granted degrees and diplomas by the Uni of See us for... Don’t Bring Disaster to Your Dinner Table This Christmas Health Unit Release The festive Christmas sea- son will soon be here. With it, come the parties, the banquets and the family Christmas din- ners of turkey and all the trimmings. We will soon be sitting down with our families, friends, and .guests to. enjoy many delicious meals that are cooked to perfection and contain all our favorite foods. However, you could invite disaster to your dinner table by improperly handling and cooking foods. Every year, a number of people suffer from food poison- ing and have their Christmas holidays spoiled. The discom- fort and misery associated with food poisoning can easily be avoided by following proper food-handling techniques. The rules are simple and are as follows: lL Keep your uncooked tur- key in the refrigerator or freezer until ready to prepare. 2. Thaw your frozen turkey either in the refrigerator, allow- ing about four-to-five hours per pound, or thaw your turkey under cold running water allow- ing one hour per pound. Foods that are thawed on the counter at room Lemperature spoil very quickly, 3. Prepare and stuff your turkey the day it is to be roasted. Dressing prepared a- head of time could cause prob- lems. 4. Ensure that your turkey is properly cooked by using a meat thermometer to check that the center of the bird has reached 165° F. before remov- ing it from the oven. Place the thermometer in the heavy part of the thigh muscle away from the bone. If no thermometer is available, the turkey should be tested by moving the drumstick up and down. It should move easily in the hip socket and the drumstick should feel soft when pressed. 5. After roasting, store your turkey in the oven at 150° F. until served. This prevents the growth of food poisoning: or- :: ganisms. 6. Immediately after serving the turkey, remove the re- maining stuffing and cut the rest of the carcass up into several smaller pieces, wrap them up, and place in the re- frigerator as quickly as pos- sible. Turkey is a good source of protein and iron and is easily digested, so prepare it safely and enjoy it.
