Air Patrols Planned For Castlegar, Trail Air patrols for the Cas- tlegar area are in the making. First noticeable signs are the white lines between Castlegar and Trail—lines which are ap- pearing throughout the pro- vince. They are 500 metres apart for a distance of 2.5 kilometres allowing air patrol to accurately monitor speeders, the slowpoke and passing offences. Sgt. Ray Mashford of Nel- son told the Castlegar News Castlegar has fl the necessary commercial pilot's licences and the required minimum 500 flying hours. British Columbia is follow- ing guidelines set down by Alberta which has used air patrols for the past 10 years. If you ask they'll tell you it all has to do with an eastern mystic order. But mostly, they'll want to talk about the Shrine circus, And why not. It goes hand-in- hand with helping the most un- fortunate in life—in this case crippled children. In a sense, a circus is a celebration of life that brings out the best in all of us, giving usan opportunity to look on the none-serious side of life for a change. Combine this with helping acrippled child somewhere and you've got a winner. And year after year, all over the country, this is what the Shriners do. Come to the circus and help a crippled child is their plea. ‘The idea is meant to tug at our heart strings and it does. The circus is for kids, because’ of kids—is how the Shriners put it. And if they do a little loud tub-thumping in days to come, who's to mind. When it comes down to taking care of crippled kids, they're crackerjacks. If you should ever visit San Francisco you'll see their big hospital on 19th Avenue just off Golden Gate Park. That's one of their units. Little Angela, who at age two, was struck by a rifle bullet and had her left hip shattered and dislocated, finished up in the Portland unit of the Shriner's hospital after exten- sive surgery. There she underwent more reconstructive surgery, but faced being left with one leg several inches shorter than the other. The doctors in Portland decided to use a West German doctor's technique to lengthen her leg. The Car Hits Ditch Two Injured An accident Sunday re- sulted in a 1972 Dodge leaving highway 3A between Brilliant Dam and Thrums Bluffs caus- ing two persons to be taken to Castlegar and District Hospital and $2,000 damage to the vehicle. Police say Dennis Walter Garrison, 19, of Surrey, and a passenger Laurie Warkola were later released from hospi- tal having suffered minor in- juries. The incident occurred when a 1960 Volvo, driven by Larry Verigin, 19, of Castlegar, was travelling south and the Garrison vehicle attempted to pass, losing control, striking the Verigin car and then rolling into the ditch. No charges have been laid. The Verigin vehicle sustained an estimated $100 damage.
