—> Castlegar News June 7, 1989 Turtles emerge at CVWMA Turtle Crossing” signs are now up around the Creston Valley Wildlite Management Area I is time to gelebrate the arduous journey for femate\ turtles and management area staft advise visitors Louse extra caution when they see these signs Female turtles have to migrate from the sate and comtortablé marsh habitat to a soft sandy spot with a southern exposure to lay their eggs, CVWMA Staff explain, This is a trip they have to make on their own and should not be interfered with The turtles carry with them about one litre of water they need to moisteri the ground, necessary for laying the eggs. Unfortunately, the turtles easily lose their precious water when trightened. That means they have to go back into the marsh to replenish the water and try the hazardous journey once more Once the eggs are laid and covered over, the female returns to the marsh This (wo-way journey exposes them to any. of their land predators, like yyotes and raccoons. The eggs are of ten dug up and eaten by other animals, rcluding birds and ground squirrels The baby turtles also have the same ng route to look forward to when hey emerge from the nest. Predators, ar tires, and collectors make it really lifticult for a successful journey. In one study it has been estimated that only two per cent of the eggs will sur vive to become adults in the marsh The western painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) is found in marshes, Reading program slated By JUDY WEARMOL Head Librarian Once again, the Castlegar library will be running a summer reading program for young children with the aid of aC hallenge '89 grant However, this year, the library has been granted funds fof only one student, with no allowance tor materials and supplies.
