Butler of South Carolina has expressed the opinion that the negro can ‘'never reach the, full measure of American manhood and citizenship in this country with his environment of race prejudice | i and ostracism,” and thinks the race should be located in Central or South Africa. He sees no hope for it, except in expatriation. On the other hand, Mr. Booker T. Washington, a leading negro, takes a more hopeful view of the future of his race. He said in a re- cent speech: “T have never felt more hopetul about the future of the race than I feel at present. Our problem, how- ever, is not to be solved by looking to congress or to the north alone, but by the reputation that each in- dividual creates for himself in his own ci ity and county. So THE ROSSLAND RECORD. ‘Today the REecorp presents to its readers another evidence ot its ef- forts to furnish a first-class evening paper, by having arranged for a telegraphic service, and the current happenings of note will be a feature of these columns. On Saturday the ReEcorpD was enlarged from five to six columns, and this was necessi-" tated through the three-column ad- vertisement of the Crescent Dry :Goods company, to which attention is called. It doesn’t seem to be so much in the design of the yachts as a de- sign of wind that is most needed off Sandy Hook. With the nation’s president in the Dakotas and the nation’s hero in the New Englend states, a spirit of en- thusiasm and patriotism is voiced throughout the Union. A hotel designed especially for women, which will hold 500 of them, is being erected in New York. Our sympathy to the man- agement. The Canadian minister of marine , and fisheries has given Canada’s consent to a temporary arranzement of the Alaskan dispute. The terms agreed upon are simply‘a line drawn across. Chilkat |’ Pass, delimitated by the river and mountain top. Ic has absolutely no significance except that we.hope to avert. local friction. Of course an arrival at even a temporary agree- ment is satisfactory. So far as the original contention is concerned, we are just as misty as ever. oe Admiral George Dewey would have been able to fly an L. L. D. degree of the University of Chicago, from the masthead of his flagship had he come out to help lay the Ppostoffice cornerstone at Chicago. Although the hero of the Corregi- dor, through his determination not to visit the west this fall, is unable to use ‘Go-it-Chicago” for a-col- lege yell now, he may at any time it suits his p‘easure, as the hood ‘and’ gown that go with a doctor's degree are said to await him when- “ever he ventures to Chicago for a “try-on.” The New York dis- patches that mention pext year as the likely time of such a visit may give the ‘varsity a chance to release its Dewey enthusiasm at the spring long us the negro is permitted un- molested to secure education, prop- erty, employment, and is given the protection of the law, I shall have great faith in our being able: to work out our own destiny.” Mr. Washington's achievements since emancipation are a hopeful in- dication for his race. “What one has done others may _ and with education and en ‘the NOTICE. in thei Matter of M.S. All tubers grow in abundance, while fruit in sections where attention has been given to it, has been grown with marked success. The soil seems to be sim- ilar to that in the Colville valley, where the finest fruit in the state of Washington is raised. It is an in- dustry which should be more gen- erally engaged in, and the money value in an acre of fruit trees is greater as a rule than can be ob- tained from any other.—Fort Steele Prospector. The strike ot the Canadian Pacific machinists has had a rather serious development, if a Montreal dispatch touching upon the subject is te be taken as correct. It is stated that the company will cease the building | of locomotives at its own works in Cxnada, after those which are now in hand have been completed, and will procure them in the states for the future. Already an order for over 30 locomotives has been placed with a Philadelphia firm. In addi- tion to the machinist’s strike the of- ficials give as a reason'for this ac- tion the fact that the work can be done more cheaply in the states. If it is true that the company has come to the decision reported, the. means a withdrawal from Canada tion and a transference to thestates of the outlay of quite a large sum of money. All will hope that a set- tlement may be reached which walt change the company’s intentio ns.— Vancouver Province. _ The conse.v ‘ive convention |: week, was a large, representative: and influencial gathering of mem-. bers from all over the province, . In Kootenay, for instance, the only place cf importance not represented was Nelson and altogether tnere were 156 accredited delegates to the convention. In consequence it is scarcely possible to exaggerate the significance of the platform adopted by them. It certainly constitutes a new departure in conservative poli- tics in many of its features but in this point is merely embodied the impression whicn has for some time past been prevalent among the con- servatives of the west that there are new issues rising on the political horizen, to which the party is bound to pay attention.—Revelstoke Her- ald.
