CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, August 6, 1959 A PERSONAL COLUMN On the Bond Burning Party at Kelownal’ By BURT CAMPBELL Kelowna was a packed but ively city Jast Saturday when ?remicr Bennett arrived in town vith the two-fold purpose of bur- iing the net debt of the provinee ind celebrating the 7th anniver- “ary of his Social Credit govern: nent in B.C. : i Bands played in the streets choughout the day and most of “ihe stores held special sales in zelebration of the ending of the public debt of B.C. One car deal- ‘ar offered to pay the provincial sales tax on all cars bought from him on Saturday. The Royal Anne Hotel's mar- quce read “Many Happy Re- ing “Happy Birthday.” Scores of men wore hat bands pro- claiming “Debt Free B.C.” in fluorescent lettering. {fes called the members of the Those who attended the dinner from outside the Premier's rid- ing sat with their own MLAs. Members of the Social. Cre- dit’ party who attended the velobration from this” riding sat with Rossland-Trait MLA Don Brothers and his lovely and radiant wife. A four-tier 600-pound birth: day cake complete with green and white icing and seven large candles stood in the middle of the banquet room. This cake was later cut up into small pieces, put in white and gold boxes, and distributed along the evening par- ade route. After the main course at the luncheon the master of ceremon- cabinet to the head table. He then presented them with toy instru. ments to play while singing Hap- py Birthday. Although the big was organized by the Social Cre- dit party to celebrate the paying off of the public debt of B.C., the emphasis throughout the day was on the celebration of Soctal Cre- dit's seven years as the govern- ment of this province. And what a celebration it . vas. It'starled at 10 in the mor- ning with four bands and the Vernon majorettes parading down Kelowna’s main street, At noon the Premier and his cabinet went to Jubilee Bowl where they were officially welcomed to the city by Mayor Dick Parkinson, . After the offictal welcome, a luncheon was held at the Aquat- ie building. Over 600 persons sat down to the cold-plate banquet. ITEM HAND TAILORING 1S OUR SPECIALTY .jowner grant; more money for Gc had a small accordian, Provincial Secretary Wesley Black beat a drum. The Premier, in a takeoff on a Vancouver Province cartoon showing him dressed’as Nero fid- dling while the bonds burned, led the band playing a fiddle. After Noel Murphy, presi- dent of the B.C. Social Credit League presented the Premier with his picture done in oils, to speak. The Premier received a stan- ding ovation and when he went to speak his voice broke. He im- mediately called upon the old speaker’s standby of calling on old friends in the audience un- til he was able to get his voice under control, He then assured all those as- sembled and the Mayor of Ke- lowna, “as a freeman of ee city,” that the debt cream and soft drinks at Kel owna's park and there were priz- es for the best-decorated bicye- les, There were even special atf- ternoon fireworks for the kids. Everyone else In the clty was invited to a garden party at Mr. and Mrs. Bennett's spac- fous home‘and grounds on Eth- el St. All the cabinet ministers I spoke to at the garden party recalled with pleasure their visits to -Castlegar, Kinnaird ‘and Robson during the Decem- ber byetection, At 545 the Premier and members of his cabinet loaded the bonds aboard a 100-foot square raft parked in front of the aquatic. The Premier, his cabinet and red-coated Mounties Posed for pictures holding the bonds with the word “void” prin- ted across them, I noticed that in addition to the word “void,” the signatures on the bonds had also been blanked out with a solid square of printer's ink. “Wait 'til we get our hands on the national debt,” called Lands Minister Williston to Don Brothers who was busy recording the scene with his movie camera, That evening the Premier, his cabinet and their wives rode through the streets of Kelowna in open convertibles to the aqua- tie show being held at Ogopogo stadium, The largest crowd ever to Pack into Ogopogo stadium fil- led It to at least one-third lar- ger than capacity. Thousands of persons who were unable to set into the stadium Ilned the park's beaches, After the aquatic show the Premier and his party went out into the lake, and at about 10 p.m. the Premier shot a fiery ar- row into the bond-piled raft, A cool evening’ breeze fanned the raft and bonds into a blazing in- ferno and the public debt of B.C. went up in flames, ’ After the bonfire was well underway the fireworks display started. Four hundred and eighty pieces of fireworks were used up in a display that lasted just over an hour. During the display the crowd powly. filed out of Ogopogo sta- dium to carry on the celebration into the wee hours of the mor- ning. Combined with the mon- ey that went to paying off the public debt, during the past seven years, Mr. Bennett hinted at an ambitious multi-million dollar program over the next 10 years which will indirectly benefit ev- ery B.C. resident. Noting that the detalls of the Program were something for the speech from the throne and the budget, the premier satd he could predict what some of those benefits would be. Some of these plans, he said include financial support for chronic hospitals; an expanded program which will benefit eld- erly citizens; an incerase from the present $28 a year home- the department of agriculture to assist the sale of farm products; new recreation facllities, and a which alone will total $1,000,000,- 000 over the next decade. afternoon over 3,000 In the children got free hot dogs, ice economical. : able, one-coat surface. - with JELLED ALKYD makes Painting simpler, faster ond more made ‘with amazing new JEULED® "ALKYD, is an entirely new, wash- flat paint for interior walls and ceilings. covers between 500-600 square Teer per gallon, depending on the comes ready for brush or roller-coater application. » dries overnight, and may be washed ‘as "often as, necessary.
