Dentists

TORONTO (CP) Increased
numbers of Ontario dentists
are facing a problem few of
them ever had cope with be-
fore - bankruptcy.

John Gillies, executive di-
rector of the Ontario Denta!
Association, said most of
those going bankrupt are
recent graduates who
borrowed $80,000 to
$100,000 to set up offices.

“In the past, a bank-
ruptcy was very unusual and
it wasn't related to the
dentist's practice,” Gillies
said, adding that bankruptcy
usually resulted from unwise
investments or stock market

dealings.

He said the problem is
threefold - high interest
rates, a. feeble Canadian
dollar with which to pay for
imported dental equipment
and.a surplus of dentists in
Canada.

Dentists have to trouble
getting bank loans. In fact,
banks compete for the busi-
ness of new dentists by
entertaining final year Meat

Ronald Lefevre, one of about
16 ‘of 121 University of
Toronto graduates setting up
a private practice this year.
“That's possibly the cause of
some bankruptcies.”

Lefevre has a loan from the

bank which charges him just
slightly over the prime rate
and requires him to pay only
interest for the first year.
“High interest rates hurt,”
he said. “It will take me more
time to pay off my debts and
be self-sufficient.But I'm
used to living on $50 a week.
“I've gone to school for so
long, another couple of years
of relative poverty won't
bother me. If five years down
the line Tm still hurting, then
Til worry.”

in U.S. dollars.

On top of that, Gillies said,
the federal government this
year added a 17-per-cent
tarriff on imports such as
medical equipment, whicti

A study just completed for
the Ontario Council of
Health, senior advisory body
to the Ministry of Health,
found that Ontario's 4,650
deatists are’ more than
enough to meet the demand.

.> SURPLUS A BENEFIT

The situation had created a
dilemma for the dental asso-
ciation, Gillies said. A small
surplus of dentists benefits
the public by making care
readily available and keeping
costs down.

But he said if competition
among dentists grows too
fierce, people may be
persuaded to undergo treat-
ment they don't need.

“Too many dentists can be
a danger to the public - but
how much is too much?”

Gillies said the surplus of
dentists is Canada-wide.

Ontario used to provide
dental graduates to other
provinces. But now the 11
dental schools - incliding an
expanded one in Halifax
which supplies the Maritimes

- turn out 450 to 500 dentists
a year, and no other pro-
vinces need dentists from
Ontario.
