The first meetings were held in the homes of the members and then moved to the Robson Com- munity Hall. At the first meeting held in the hall; a slate of offi- cers were elected—Mrs. Harold Hett, President, and Mrs. F. Foxlee, first Vice-President. There were 15 Charter Members: Mrs. H. Hett; Mrs. A. Thorpe; Mrs. E.A. Lam- pard; Mrs. J. Webster; Mrs. W. Porter; Mrs. E. A. McDonald; Mrs. H: Foxlee; Mrs. R. Webster; Mrs. R. Berry; Mrs. J. Lawsen; Mrs. R. Devitt; Mrs McDonald; Mrs. S. Humphries; Mrs. O. A. Ballard; Mrs. E. S. Martin. The only one we know of that is still a member in good standing is Mrs. Ann McDonald of White Rock, B.C.. After about a year it was decided to move the meetings to Castlegar as most of the members lived there. These meetings were held in the Post Office Building which was owned by Ralph West. Through the years Branch No. 170 has worked on the present building, and today we have a building of which to be proud. In those early days, a drama group was formed by the Auxiliary. They put on plays in such places as Robson and Slocan, always to packed houses as there were no theatres in those days. Mrs. R. Kerr, who was President in 1947, came up with the idea of having a Fall Fair in the District. It was held in the Legion Hall, but soon the building was too small so both legion and Russian Halls were used. As the Fair got bigger, it moved to Stan- ley Humphries School and then in the final years, into the Arena. In 1965 the last Fair was held due to the difficulty of finding judges for the various exhibits and members to come out and help. Every year the Auxiliary has an Anniversary Tea in the Spring, and this year was our 50th Anniver- sary. We had a very good attendance from the gen- eral public, and it was a successful day. Each year the Auxiliary takes an active part in Poppy Days and Remembrance Day. They take part on City Parades and other local functions whenever asked. Every week the Ladies ofthe Auxiliary visit the patients in the Hospital. They give each patient a kind word, and a treat from the basket of goodies supplied by Branch No. 170. Catering and -holding teas and coffee parties are the main means of raising funds. For several years, the Auxiliary also held Sunday night bingos. When the Castlegar District Hospital was built, the ladies Auxiliary helped the Branch furnish a ward. Over the years the Auxiliary has donated money to the Veterans Hospitals in Vancouver, Shaugh- nessy, George Derby Centre, plus supporting all projects set up by the Legion Auxiliary Pacific Command. Each year we also send money to the Bursary Fund. Locally we have tried to help as. many Organizations as possible, such as Guides, Brownies, Senior Citizens, Child Care, Hospital, Library and many others. Our motto is to help the Royal Canadian Legion take care of the Veterans and their dependents, and it has been our pleasure to have been able to do this We have always worked well with the Branch to help them whenever possible. We supplied many of the items in the hall. It has been a-great 50 years, and we are looking forward to another successful 50 years. —Helen Leduc, L.A.
