Because, brothers and sisters, in the gospel according to Prince the way to salvation is through God, love and the power and the glory of sex. Lot's of it, While Moral Majority might not find much wrong with the heavenly message, their ears will turn blue with lyrics like “race cars burn rubber in my pants.” Many of the lines are plainly unprintable. At the time, it was reported Black Album was held up because of lewd lyries. Later reports said Prince was recording Lovesexy and he was so excited he wanted Black Album set aside to make way for his Lovesexy is far denser and raunchier than last year’s excellent Sign O° the Times, which marked a commercial comeback for Prince. For one thing, Lovesexy is a concept album. At the start of the album, Prince welcomes people to his “new “The reason my voice is so clear is that there's no smack (heroin) Lovesexy is the all-giving, all-satisfying power of love and sex With charismatic fervor, Prince says that onee one has accepted Lovesexy, “All life is easier, no question is unresolved.” To Prince “spooky” is evil, a seductive power that lives through Prince album preaches sex drug use, vandalism and violence. Prince gets downright preachy, urging sinners to repent all events in the first song, No — as in just “say no” to drugs, and “say yes” to God. But questions do persist about just how much of this Prince actually believes, and how much is just opportunistic claptrap. For those who just want to listen to the music, Lovesexy comes down to accent the positive — or the “positivity” as Prince says. All this sermonizing is done over a powerful pastiche, mixing Sly Stone funk with Jimi Hendrix psychedelia and even Keith Emerson keyboards, Lovesexy is richly textured with layers of sound entwined with the voices of Prince and his wild crew, and each tune seems to weave seamlessly into the next. ‘The music is incredibly rich, proving that while many people may find Pince repulsive and question his sincerity, he's still a leading light in popular music. His fusion of white and black music is the most glorious crossover sound since vintage Sly Stone FAIR FOLLOW Bruce Hornsby’s mid-western rock 'n’ roll was the new sound of 1986, and his debut album The Way It Is sold enough copies to keep the Virginian in plaid shirts forever. Scenes From the Southside (RCA) is his fair follow up. Hornsby has stayed on course with the same basic sound and the same straining voice, but he has pounded out a lot more fleet-and-fluid piano. He's giving the folks what they want. The songwriting is a little more topical as Hornsby strikes out at crooked evangelists, redneck “patriots” and greedy financiers, but it's not biting enough to scare away the yuppies who eat up his sepia-toned Americana, Fans will find the album as comfortable as a favorite sweater, but the Hornsby sound is starting to wear thin. Art show opens Local sculptor Francesca Martino opens a two-week show at the Gallery of the Kootenays in Nelson Friday evening. Martino’s chosen medium is bronze. Her sculpture follows ano ther traditional method in which a malleable material, clay, plaster or wax, is built up to create the desired form. Molds are then made and the pieces reach their final durable form through a bronze pour using the lost wax method. Martino's work is notable for its sensation of movement and grace and strength of line. Martino came to the Kootenays from England. She had studied sculpture in England and had worked there with two well-known British sculptors. After arriving in Nelson, she con- tinued her practice of sculpture at the Kootenay School of Art and the David Thompson University Centre. She was co-founder and artistic director of Inkling Gallery and Studios in Crawford Bay. Since 1986 she has devoted herself fulltime to sculpture and works out of her North Shore studio. She says of her work: “During the past few years, I have been exploring repeating patterns and relationships using the female form as the form to work with. Patterns are the fabric of the Universe. History and sociology show that humanity behaves in pat- terns of behavior both collectively and individually. I am exploring pat- terns in both the collective and the individual history of women. “Simply Good Food” S22~ Breakfast Special sHHSUY° HOMESTEAD PANCAKES....... SCULPTOR OPENS SHOW .. . New Democrat Dan Miller said the remarks made by Parker suggest the unemployment of native Indians following the closure of the Hazelton sawmill has something to do with their culture. The mill, which closed last week after area timber licences were given to other companies, had more than 80 Indians in its 100-member workforce. During a meeting of local mayors and community leaders, Parker re- portedly said, “you know as well as I do that in any other culture they would move to look for work.” In the legislature, Miller read the quote, published in a Hazelton weekly paper, then asked: “Will the minister now apologize for this blat- antly racist remark.” “Mr. Speaker, I- still don’t recall using those words and I don't see any reason for an apology,” said Parker. Noting the mayor of Hazelton is furious about the incident, Miller suggested Parker's credibility has been destroyed and can only be re. gained by a retraction and an apology.
