So far as making promises is con- cerned the word Liberal is well ap- Plied to that party in Canada; so faras keeping them is concerned the term is not so applicable. In 1896 the Liberals went before the country promising to introduce many important reforms. They promised to give the country a free trade tariff. The tariff they adopted was less than one-half of one per cent lower than that of their prede- cessors. In 1896 Sir Wilfrid pledged him- selfto reduce the expenditures and lessen the public debt. The country was given to understand that at least $3,000,000 a year could be saved in its current expense ac- count. But as shown by figures re- cently published the Liberal govern- ment has increased the taxes by $10,000,000, added $8,000,000 to the expenditures and $7,000,000 to the public debt. —_ It will be noticed that Sir Wilfrid's platform this year makes no reference to economy or to lower taxation, and is judiciously silent on the subject of the public debt. .» In 1896 the Liberals promised to give Canada a fast Atlantic service; but no reference is made to the mat- ARE THEY ECONOMICAL?
