But a year after arriving in Toronto with his wife and and three-year-old child, Joaquin — who didn’t want his last name used — was among more than a dozen people who met recently in a church basement to clear their consciences for officers they fled Portugal because they were persecuted their religious beliefs. They had professed to be Jehovah's Witnesses. The men and women, as well as about 350 other Portuguese across Canada, now admit they are Roman Catholics. They claim they were conned into saying they were Jehovah's Witnesses by immigration consultants and lawyers operating in the Portuguese community. Four Sundays ago Catholic priests told them they should now tell the truth. They also asked Portuguese living illegally in Canada — the number may be as high as 5,000 — to come forward. The priests, through Toronto lawyer Richard Boraks, want to show they are acting against the flourishing market of illegals in their community. Hosted by the Ministry of Forests, Arrow Forest District Expo visits to total 16 million VANCOUVER (CP) — Ex po 86 officials havé revised their Throug the Portuguese community there is concern the federal government may react to the problem of false refugees by placing a strict visa requirement on Portugal and initiating mass deportations. What triggered the concern was recent reports that hundreds of Portuguese had made refugee claims, saying they were Jehovah's Witnesses fleeing religious persecution in their homeland. “I was taken to a consultant and he told me to apply as a Jehovah's Witness,” Jose told The Globe and Mail. He said the him to offices and “he told me how to act, what to say and even told me to take off my crucifix.” He said he and his wife have paid the consultant $500 each and owe another $1,000 each. Ed Graca, a spokesman for the Portuguese Network, said his group does not support deporting illegals. He said a good part of the blame lies with Canada's Because of the backlog in Canada's refug tion process, thousands of people from around the world have, made bogus refugee claims in the last year, Boraks said. The backlog guarantees them status in Canada for the three to five years it takes for their cases to be heard. During that period they are issued a work permit. The federal government says it is working on a new refugee system that will hear claims within six months. Leaders of the Jehovah's Witnesses in Canada and the consul-general of Portugal in Toronto deny there is religious persecution in Portugal. Joaquin and several other refugee claimants told the Toronto Globe and Mail they got the Jehovah's Witness idea from immigration lawyers, consultants and travel agente operating in Portuguese it in Toronto, Brampton and Windsor. Joaquin, who had been working illegally in a factory for several months, said he was approached by a woman one day who told him of the scam. “She brought me toa lawyer's office and I was told to go to immigration and say I was a Jehovah's Witness and ask for refugee status,” he said. Joaquin said he paid $500 for the advice and the lawyer wants another $500. Jose, 30, said he and his wife came to Toronto last August as visitors but were asked if they would like to stay in Canada. The NDP has put forward a motion condemning the government for not taking adequate measures to pro tect Canada's interests. However, New Democrat House Leader Ian Deans says he'd be willing to withdraw the motion if he could get all-party support to send a message to Congress. “Our intention in moving the motion today was in the hope that the Parliament of Canada might agree in fact that these issues are vital and that could transmit the view of Parliament to the Congress of the U.S.,” Deans said. Fulton, MP for the north- ern British Columbia riding of Skeena, said Canadian for- est workers will be in “dire circumstances” should Con- gress pass any of about a dozen pieces of i refugee system. “If it didn’t take so long to hear a case, the process wouldn't be abused.” From $82,000 to $67,900 Riverview with 2 fireplaces, built-in fridge, Hare stove; drapes, air-conditioner, and metal shed included.
