The poll, conducted by the Roper Organization, said: e Eight in 10 women be- lieve that single women should enjoy the same sexual freedom-as men, up from fewer than six in 10 who be- lieved that 15 years ago. e Forty-nine per cent of American women now con- sider sex before marriage as immoral, down from 65 per cent who believed that in 1970. Forty-four per cent said they did not believe premar- ital sex is immoral. No opin- ion.was registered by the re- maining séven per cent. e Half of the 3,000 women who were interviewed for the poll said they saw no reason why a single woman should not hae children and raise them ‘on her own. But when asked if such behavior would be acceptable for their own daughters, only 15 per cent said yes. . Of the 1,000 men in- terviewed, 43 per cent want- ed a traditional marriage, compared with 50 per cent in the 1974 poll. Seventy-two per cent of female respondents said women can be happy without marriage, but only 57 per cent of the women thought men could be happy without marriage. - Sixty per cent of the men believed both men . and women could be happy with- out marriage. sex attitudes women were equally divided on whether the father should have the right to veto an abortion.
