In the course of his recollections, he includes names “Dear Bob: “As I try to recollect some of the happenings of my early years I will endeavor to be as accurate as T can; but as to the exact times and names, I cannot be certain. “Possibly, the first thing I can remember clearly was the Wesley fire of 1925 which occurred when I was around three or four and Olaf about 2‘: years younger. remember feverishly looking for our socks. It must wed been shortly after that, that we moved from the house that then stood in the field later known as the “ field” after Kelly Lotze who set up a planer mill there. It is better known now as the trailer court. We moved to a one-room square log house which is still standing slightly above and northwest of where the Greg Sahistrom family has their house. I believe it was a bit later that the kitchen was added. It was built of lumber. Home was about two miles from the store and post office at Blueberry Creek which was run by the Beresfords. ‘possibly, the first thing | can remember clearly was the Wesley fire of 1925' We did most of our shopping there except for the odd trip that Dad made to Trail, and for the grain for animals which we got from Castlegar. The mail only came in about two or three times a week. I can remember being at the store, waiting for the train and seeing quite a few people from the village at Champion Creek coming to shop and get their mail. Ellen Beresford was the postmistress and her husband Ike the big strong man of the store. Dad had special respect for his strength when he worked with him on the railroad across from Schofield Creek. They used to have to push the loaded rail carts by hand and it took a specially heavy push by Ike to get them started. Ike died one hot summer day and was buried in the Robson cemetery where Dad helped to dig the grave. The rocks they encountered while digging were quite a contributing factor to Dad’s deciding to bury brother Olaf, (who passed away at the age of 13, August 19, 1937), on the farm thus starting a private cemetery. Reuben Kirk came later and helped Ellen at the store for quite a few years before she passed away in the late 40s. Of the oldtimers, Brooks (a brother of the fames artist Alan Brooks) lived at the top of the riverbank of the point beyond Miles Reeds. Ashworth lived in the hollow formed bythe old CPR fill across Blueberry Creek where the Blueberry school, was situated. “He was very English and quite a good cook — he cooked for the 1924 survey camp,” Joe recalls. I started school in the fall of 28. Others going to John Charters . . . Reffections ér llections Seas COUGAR SEASON . school included one or two Postnikoffs, I think a Jevatkoff boy, possibly some Semenoffs and a Harrison girl. But that effort was short-lived since the school closed in October due to too few pupils. It didn't open again until about the fall of 33 after Olaf and I had taken three years of correspondence school with Mother as our teacher. I had gone to Kinnaird and then to Castlegar schools (after the two schools merged) where I took my fifth grade. Florence May Dinney came to Blueberry Creek from the Argenta area as our teacher, together with her two brothers, Ron and Claude. She brought them with her to increase the number of students in the school.” Henry Gopp and his family, together with the Brooks, the Ashworths, the Beusfords, Harrisons and the Smenoffs were in the area before the Killoughs; who in turn were followed by the Stuarts, the Collinsons and the Ellis's. Frank and Betty Humphries, also early residents, lived in the house later occupied by Pete and Nelly LaLonde. It was destroyed in the 1938 fire. Nils, Annie and Ole Carlson built a home close to where Trowlex is now situated. They bored wooden pipe and put in close to a mile of waterline to bring water to the house from Blueberry Creek. Before they. built their house, I don’t. remember a single house along the highway between Blueberry-and the old white Killough house almost across the highway from where the Sandman Inn now stands. Carlsons built a small sawmill and cut lumber for their house, and for the house. Chris Anderson built later and which was the start of our house. The one-room frame Blueberry school was built in 1915, in the hollow north of the railroad track fill near the Ashworth place on Beresford's ‘land. It served the Blueberry farmers, loggers and men working building the railroad and car road to Trail The school opened in November with teacher The school opened in November 1916 by the railroad tracks in Castlegar with teacher Christine Marshall, Gwen and little Harry Killough.” > * . . Charlie Sahistrom and brother Walter with cougars, There were nine children enrolled: Gopps, Harrisons and Semenoffs. The little school was closed at the end of Oct. 1927 because they could not enrol the minimum of eight students, so Carl only had two months in Grade 1. Mother taught them by B.C. correspondence until 1983 when she became desperate to have a better education for her boys and organized the Blueberry people to action, They advertised for a teacher with children, and with the help of Inspector P.H. Shoffield of Nelson, hired May Dinney Mother pushed for the school so they made her secretary-treasurer for that year, but due to the difficulty of walking those two miles in winter to hold school board meetings, she gave up the job in 1935. Her desire to have her sons taught in school is proven by the fact that Carl maintained perfect ‘attendance and younger brother Olaf only missed one day all their time at Blueberry in spite of the four-mile walk each day, together with winter.snows, bears and cougars. Carl spent two years at Blueberry and Olaf three years until he died of leukemia August, 1937. When I was going to the Castlegar school I took a day or so off to go trapping with dad to the old “half-way” (halfway to Naney Greene Lake) and then on to the Sheep Lake cabin where he stored his traps for the spring. We travelled on snowshoes and it was quite a trip. There was not much of a trail and I can remember especially the last part of the trip seeming pretty long and exhausting even after we could see the upper side of Mount Foreb above our home. One year when we went to school walking across the flat Dad and his brother, Walter, trapped and shot nine FAIR GLASS WINDOWS & DOORS * Glass Windows * Doors © Overheod Doors WHOLESALE PRICES Call 365-2309 (anytime) INCLUDE THE PRICE: vertising items for sale, its always advisable to eoders state the " phone mention ASPARAGUS direct from $1.00 per Ib.
