Castlégar News November 13, 1986 Government reviewing use of 2,4-D TORONTO (CP) — The days of the world's most popular weed-killer may be numbered in Canada. Two federal departments are conducting a high-pri. ority review of 2,4-D, used for 40 years by thousands of Canadian farmers and foresters and millions of home owners but now suspected of causing cancer. Ontario and New Brunswick have imposed temp- orary restrictions, anda ~— decision on whether the ‘hemical is too rs use is by the beginning of the — growing season. “I'd be very astonished if everything remains as it is,” Frank Wandelmaier, a section head in the pesticides division of the federal Department of Health and Welfare said in an interview. The Health Ministry has already expressed concern about the chemical’s safety to Agriculture Canada, which has the final say on restrictions. “We can't go into another use season without a definite decision,” said Doug Mewett, a scientist with Ontario's Environment Ministry. IMPACT GREAT Health hazards won't be the only factors considered, since any significant cuts in the use of 2,4-D could have enormous impact on farms and forestry. Since it was developed shortly after the Second World War, huge quantities of the chemical have been spread on lawns, golf courses, forests, roadsides and farm fields to eradicate unwanted plants. In Canada last year, 4.5 million kilograms were sprayed on almost seven million hectares. Worldwide, it’s a $14-billion-a-year product. Pesticide should stay TORONTO (CP) — Lasso, a popular weed killer banned in Canada for health reasons, should remain on the market in the United States, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says. The farm pesticide, also called alachlor, has been shown to cause cancer in test animals and was banned by Ottawa in 1985. But the economic benefits of continuing to use Lasso — the most widely used agri- culture herbicide in the world — outweight its potential health risks, the U.S. agency said after almost two years of study. A ban on Lasso would cost American farmers hundreds of millions of dollars in re- duced productivity and high- er pesticide costs in the first year, although costs passed on to the consumer would be nominal, the agency said in a 125-page report. More than 40 million kilo- grams of the chemical are sprayed in the United States each year, mainly on corn and If 2,4-D is found to be too g' for use, there will be dramatic repercussions. The herbicide is cheap and effective — in some cases almost irreplaceable. It is selective — eliminating broad-leafed weeds such as dandelions while leaving grass untouched, which makes it useful for gardeners hoping for lush, weed-free lawns. Forestry companies also spray the chemical to stop unwanted growth from choking young trees in re- forestation areas. ‘And it's invaluable for farmers growing cereal crops such as wheat, oats and barley. ‘ FILL SOME USES Other chemicals could fill some uses of 2,4-D. But they are more expensive and most can't be used in such a wide variety of applications. The chemical “re ved agriculture, for cereal grains,” says Alex Chisolm, secretary of Ontario's pesticides committee. Until 2,4-D, there was no effective way to remove weeds on Prairie farms and grain was being choked, Chisolm said. “Out west, it is vitally important. It could have serious repercussions if it was not available.” Government committees have studied 2,4-D in the past, and always concluded it can be applied without undue hazard, he said But “times change, and we have to look at the data.” A U.S. National Cancer Institute study of Kansas farmers found higher-than-average incidence of lymph and soft-tissue cancer among some men exposed at least 20 days a year to heavy doses of chemicals, including 2,4-D. Other tests appeared to show more brain tumors in rats exposed for two years to extremely high doses of 2,4-D. executive In Canada, the agency's recommendation has been tabled as evidence before the Alachlor Review Board, a federal inquiry into the ban on created after high levels of the chemical were found in wells and municipal drinking water in several Ontario communities. WANTS TESTS While the U.S. agency called for additional tests to determine the health risks to people who drink well water containing traces of Lasso, it said the risks from eating food or drinking surface water that contain traces of the chemical are “reasonable, given the (economic) benefits of continued use.” Instead of banning Lasso, the agency wants its use restricted to government- certified buyers. The report, released last month, also said Lasso pro- ducts should continue to carry health-warning labels and that farmers who spray’ the chemical over more than 150 hectares a year should use equipment minimizing their contact with it. ~—><=go a long way?
