It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with ' a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin! So watch yourselves . . ."" (Vi-3a) That sounds like very harsh judgment. But Christ-our Lord was well aware that the example set by parents and adults in general has a very great influence on the lives of children as they grow up. So he is saying, “‘Make sure your example does not lead children in the wrong direction.’” Obviously it is better to send children to Sunday school than not to have them attend at all. (It is possible they will find a significant adult there that they will take for an example, and so continue to live their life by the moral and spiritual values of the Christian faith.) But the chances are far more likely that when they get to be a teenager they will drop out altogether. It is only natural for them to reason that !f their parents do not attend Sunday school and church, it certainly can't be very important. Parents who don’t want their children to curse and swear, should set an example of wholesome conver- sation. If they feel it is not good for their child to cheat or steal, or smoke, or drink intoxicating beverages, then they ought to set the proper example. As for religious training and church attendance, not everyone will agree that this is desirable and worthwhile. but if the parents want their children to absorb these values and live by them, then they ought to set the example and participate on a regular basis. Otherwise your actions will say to the child “‘religious faith and values are not important.’” So, why not decide to’ give your children the best possible opportunity to build a strong spiritual foundation for their lives? Women’s Aglow to meet Rosalie Fitzpatrick will be the special guest speaker at a luncheon meeting of the Castlegar Women’s Agiow Fellowship to be held at the Fireside Inn at 10:30 a.m. March 7. Fitzpatrick was born into a French heritage in Bathurst, N.B. Although she met her husband in Montreal, they married in Fort St. John. Their deep appreciation for the beauty of British Columbia has resulted in their Auxiliary March 7 living in various areas of the province, the last nine years being in the Trail vicinity, a news release says. They have one daughter, who is currently working with Youth With a Mission in Australia and Indonesia. Fitzpatrick has been employed as a full-time home support aide in the Trail area for the past three years. She has served as vice-president of the Trail Aglow Fellowship and has been actively involved in her church in women’s ministries, Sunday school and Bible study ‘teaching and as GREETINGS RECEIVED . . . Guatemalan insters living in a refu camp In southern Mexico show off the Christmas cards they received from youth groups at the Castlegar United Church. Local children help refugees Sunday school children from Castlegar United Church have a special relationship with a group of Guatemalan youngsters living in a refugee camp in southern Mexico. The contact with the camp started in the spring of 1986 when Bud God- deris travelled to Mexico to meet with representatives of various Guatemalan human rights and refugee groups, a news release says. He was part of a delegation from B.C.’s Christian Taskforce on Cen- tral America, an ecumenical group that encourages building stronger links between the people of Central America and B.C. During that trip and on a sub- sequent visit in 1988, Godderis visited one of the Guatemalan refugee camps which are located in southern Mexico, Mexico with approximately 50,000 in United Nations funded camps, the release says. In the camp, he met with many children and their families, . talking with the people about their situation and the military violence in Guatemala that continues to keep them from returning back home. Castlegar United, which had helped Godderis make the trips, has main- tained contact with the people in the camp since that time. The Sunday school children and other youth groups in the church, including Canadian Girls in Training, have made several contributions to “a weaving project in the camp schools and have sent drawings and cards on special occasions. Recently, the Sunday school received a package of photographs March 4, 1990 Castlégar News 87 “Who’s there?” ———_— SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 9 (CASTLEGAR) YEAR ONE PRIMARY (Kindergarten) REGISTRATION For the 1990/91 School Year Parents wishing to enroll their child in either the English Year One Primary (Kindergarten) o ‘ear One Primary (Kindergarten) for September 1990 are asked to register thelr Xhild of the elementary schoo! indicated below: SCHOOLS DAY DATE Castlegar Primary (Twin Monday, Tuesday March 12, 13 Rivers, Castlegar Primary Ootischenia) Kinnaird Elementary (Kinnaird Elementary, Valley Vista, Blueberry Monday, Tuesday March 12, 13 Creek) Robson Elementary Thursday March 15 Tarrys Elementary Monday March 12 Tuesday March 13 Woodland Park (Woodland Thursday March 15 Park, Pass Creek) Children may enroll in Year One Primary on the following entry da = Wa child’ Htth birthday occurs inthe peried from rom Jon. 1.1 TBh0 te October 3 1990, they enter on the first school day of — Wa child's fifth birthday occurs in from Nov. 1, 1990 to April 30, 1991, they enter on the first school day of Jenvary 1991.
