May 10-12, the Castlegar and District Recreation Department will host the 1990 British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association’s annual provincial conference. This will be the first time the conference has been held in a city of Castlegar’s size and also the first time the conference has been held east of the Okanagan, says Castlegar and district recreation director Pat Metge who will serve as chairman of the conference. As many as 400 delegates from across the provin- ce as well as Alberta, Washington state and Idaho are expected at the conference which Metge says will benefit recreation managers, parks personnel, recreation programmers, facility managers, volunteers and elected officials. ‘‘We have put together a conference program which we feel has something to offer each of you,” Metge says. ‘With an excellent pre-conference Program, outstanding general session speakers, i i i sessions, i ing exhibits; entertaining social activities and reasonable accom- modations and travel opportunities, we have great ex- Pectations.’* “Great expectations’’ is the theme of this year’s conference. Metge says he is delighted with the response he has had in terms of sessions planned and early registration. One of the keynote speakers will be Joe Curtis, a retired commissioner_of parks and_recreation_from New Rochelle, N.Y. Curtis will present a session called Stepping into the Future. Alvin Law of Regina will also speak at the con- ference: Law is the president of the Alvin Law Group and a well-known international motivational speaker. A graduate from Mount Royal College with a diploma in radio and TV Arts, Law is also an accomplished musician. He was one of the first thalidomide babies in Canada but has not let his disability get in the way of his goals. Law, who created and presented the program in Sask Will present a motivating session, Entering the 90s — No Problem. Dr. Peter Frost, a professor in the faculty of commerce at the University of British Columbia, will speak on The Invisible War — Office Politics and Ethics. Situated in a mountainous valley at the mouth of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers, Castlegar is an ‘outdoor recreation paradise. The surrounding moun- tains offer some of the finest downhill skiing in the province. Cross-country ski trails are within minutes of community. The rivers, in conjunction with theArrow Lakes, offer excellent fishing, boating, sailing and wind surfing. The rugged mountain terrain offers a wide variety of hiking and climbing experiences. To augment these natural recreation oppor- tunities, the local recreation department plays a very active part in community affairs. The department is responsible for the operation of the Community Complex, two arenas, one regional overnight camping park, the new indoor Aquatic Com tre plus the p of y parks and playgrounds. The department's success is evident by the high usage each of these facilities receive. A major component of the department is the programming division. It is the aim of the department to offer the widest range of recreational opportunities to the greatest number of people at the lowest cost possible. As a result, the programs offered vary from cake decorating, weaving and aerobics to gymnasitcs, art and skating: The y with to these activities and it is nothing to see people on registration day waiting in line for over an hour for registration to begin. Because of the demand for and popularity of the programs, the department continually attempts to of- fer new and different activities. Along with the regular program activities the offers special events ig the year. t People in Castlegar have come to expect a high quality of recreation experience. Whether it is gained by-one’s own initiative or through the assistance of the recreation department, it is certainly available. The recreation opportunities in the area are only going to grow. Completion of the new softball field at the Com- munity Complex and continuing improvements to other recreational facilities in the city are just some of the plans in the coming year. Castlegar will host the provincial softball cham- pionships this August.
