The number of Canadian automobiles returning to Cana- da through the Paterson border crossing south of Rossland increased 59.45 per cent during the first quarter of this year, a trend that continued through April and May, although at a slightly slower pace, according to data the Castlegar News spent? from Statistics Cana- > At the end of the first quar- ter, 17,649 automobiles (not including trueks and other vehi- cles) had returned through Paterson compared to 11,069 in the same quarter of 1990. he most dramatic increases occurred in the number of Canadians making quick one- day forays into the U.S.,— reflected in the number of autos returning the same day. One-day return trips were up 76.45 per cent in the first quar- ter at Paterson, a figure that includes an enormous 127 per cent increase in February when 4,880 automobiles returned through Paterson, compared to 2,146 in February 1990. The reason for the huge increase is clear to Harry Stan, executive director of the Castle- gar and District Development Board. “Backlash to the GST. Unquestionably,” Stan said in an interview with The News. The federal government introduced the seven per cent goods and services tax on Jan. 1. Stan said the numbers on the price tags in the U.S. which look so good to Canadian shop- pers don’t tell the whole story. “It all looks nice,” he said, when a shoppers compare the cost of an item in the States to the cost of the same or a similar item in Canada. “But you have to add on all the rest of it — the cost of get- ting those goods — the duty, the exchange that you have to pay,” Stan said. Kirk Duff said Tuesday. Duff, city council’s protective services chairman, said he discussed the situation with Staff Sgt Doug Hall who told Duff the RCMP have resched uled shifts and are making foot patrols in areas where vandalism has been a problem, such as Kinsmen Park. As well, police in civilian dress are patrolling the areas in unmarked cars and on bicycles, Duff told council Tuesday.
