FIELD HOCKEY Stanley Humphries sec- ondary school’s senior girls field hockey team advanced to the West Kootney champi- onship by beating J.L. Crowe of Trail 1-0 at Kinnaird Junior secondary school Tuesday. Laurel Closkey scored the winner for SHSS, which will play Rossland secondary in the final today at Kinnaird Park at 3:30 p.m. “I guess they paid me back- on this one,” said SHSS coach Andrea Hughes some top notch competition at a tournament in Agassi. The girls only loss in the defensive games and Andrea Hughes was really good on the forward line on right wing,” she said. Win or lose today the senior girls won't be attending the provincial championships be- cause Chernoff was forced to cancel due to an unstable transportation situation at the school. Even though the situ- ation was clarified Tuesday Chernoff said the schedule for the provincials had to be made last week (see story on Page Bl.). “The kids are ready to play and they would do well but were staying home,” said Chernoff. M hile, the SHSS _ju- round robin tour came in their first game against the provincially ranked team from Sardis, who beat them 1-0. In was smooth sailing from then on in as SHSS posted a 2- 1 win over-Agassi and 3-0 vic- tory over Comox. The LVR girls knocked off SHSS in the semifinal then took on and beat the highly touted Mount Sentinel senior girls in the final to win the Kootenay Classic. “They really couldn't do anything wrong,” said SHSS coach Stoch Uchida, whose girls finished third in the 10- team tournament. “They deserved it though,” said Uchida, “they worked re- hard.” al E The SHSS girls, who are ranked in the top 10 provin- cially, advanced to the playoff round with a record of 3-1 in their division after the round for robin.
