212 Wednesday, June 3, 1992 Bl Residents around Stanley Humphries sick of litter-stained lawns Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER June 1-7 is Environment Week in Canada, but accord- ing to Rod MacKinnon, you wouldn’t know it by looking at the area around Castlegar’s high school. “When you walk around the (Lorne Zinio) tennis courts all you see is garbage,” the area resident said. “I mean, these kids say they want to save the envi- ronment and then they throw their juice cans all over the place.” MacKinnon said no matter how many garbage cans are put out, the problem remains. That’s why he took his con- cern to what he believes is the heart of the matter — Stanley Humphries Secondary School. _ “We address this problem in two ways,” said vice-princi- pal Grant Lenarduzzi. “We ask the student council to make it a focus of theirs, be- cause hopefully students have more of an influence on their fellow-students. “Also, we (the administra- tion) remind the students at assemblies and other-oppor- tune times not to litter.” And Lenarduzzi adds that aclean up program is already in place. “Currently, when a student has some misbehavior that goes against the rules of the school, one of the ways they can make up for it is by doing service for the school, and we send them out to pick up lit- ter.” However, Lenarduzzi ad- mits that those efforts are not. always successful. “It doesn’t seem to change the fact that litter is always in place,” he said. Lenarduzzi also feels his school needs help if the prob- lem is to be solved. “This really isn’t strictly school based. It’s a value- based item where the belief that it’s not okay to litter can be preached here at school, but it has to come from society or family also to be effective.” One local resident who chose not to be identified said he agrees with Lenarduzzi, but also feels the city is shirk- ing it’s responsibility. “The city should look after this mess,” the homeowner said. “All my neighbors agree. We pay taxes for the school and now it doesn’t matter where you look, there’s garbage all over.” Mayor Audrey Moore in- sists the city is acting to solve the problem. “Over the years from time to time we have had com- plaints,” Moore said. “But it’s really a matter of sitting down with the student government and reaching a conclusion.” Moore added that if the need were to arise, she or one of the members of council would meet with the S.H.S.S. student council.
