Carew, 14, sweeps to club i Pre-tourney favorites falter as kid wins junior championship in a walk. Ed Mills SPORTS EDITOR A 14-year-old junior high school student took on his elders and won last weekend in becoming the new Castlegar Golf Course junior champion. And, to put it plainly, it wasn’t even close. Marty Carew shot atwo-round total of 151 in surprising an older, more experienced field to claim the title as Castlegar’s best under 18-year-old golfer. A Grade 8 student at Kinnaird Junior Secondary School, Carew shot 78 Saturday, then came back with a blistering one-over-par 73 Sunday to win the tourney by 11 strokes. While they could not say for certain, Castlegar Golf Course officials believe Carew is the first 14-year-old to win the event in its 36-year history. “I’ve improved a lot over the years,” Carew said Tuesday. “And I've really been playing good lately.” Mike Myhra finished second with a two-round total of 81-81- 162 , while last year’s runner up Todd Archambault ballooned to 84 in the second round to finish third with a total of 163. Another pre-tourney favorite, Marty’s older brother Jody, finished fourth with 81-86-167. Carew led by a stroke after Saturday’s 24-player club- member-only round, and his 73 was still the best Sunday when the field increased to 54 players as part of the regular local junior circuit. title Carew, who finished third in the tourney last year, said he knew he he had to play well in the second round with Archambault just a shot behind him after the first 18 holes. But even he was surprised at just how well he responded under the pressure. “Todd’s a good player, I thought for sure he’d come back Sunday. But I was two under on the front nine (Sunday) and that was it.” Carew said it was his putter that proved to be the difference for him. “My putting-was-really-good that day, I made a lot of key putts,” he said. Castlegar Golf Course assistant pro Steve Johnston, who tutors Archambault and both Carews, said Carew is wise beyond his years on the golf course. “He’s smart on the golf course and that’s his big advantage over everybody else. his head game is very strong,” Johnston said. And, like all good players, Johnston said Carew is a slave to the game. “Specifically, he’s out here a lot more often than any of the other players, at least a couple of hours more a day. And even that small edge adds up over a week or a month or a year,” he said. Besides bragging rights for the year, the win gives Carew an automatic berth in the Sunflower Men’s Open, the city’s most prestigious tournament. Pat Biln, 89-95-184, came fifth, and Vaughn Welychko, 90-100- 190 was sixth. The top 10 included Devon Cheveldaeff, 193, Chris Gray, 199 Grady Moore, 203 and Ken Young, 212. a Need a mortgage?
