ata Wednesday; July’ 22; 1992 mi” * @ Organizers, namesake look back on another successful tournament Jonathan Green SPORTS REPORTER No matter how you look at it, the annual Jim Young Celebrity Golf Tournament was a success. Again. The sun was shining, there was a slight breeze and the course looked and played as good as it ever had. But, most importantly, everyone had a good time and the Red Cross made some money. Twenty-six five-man teams teed it up at the local course last Thursday and, af- ter the last ball had been sunk and the last piece of sports memorabilia had been auctioned off, the local Red Cross was some $18,000 rich- er. “I’m always anticipating there might be something disastrous, but everything went as smoothly as can be,” said Kootenay Region repre- sentative Harry Grossmith. “We had lots of fun.” Ex-B.C. Lion John Blain, along with Brian Miller, Cam Barlow, Ray Bartlett and Laurie Palibroda, took home top spot in the best-ball for- mat, coming in at 13’under. Vancouver Canuck Jim Sandlak, Alex Birukow, Jim Milne, Brian Brown and Jeff Bywater were a stroke back as was the team of ex-Lion Paul Girody, Chuck Davison, Nick Oglow, Gary Kilpatrick and Keith Stewart. Prior to the tourney, Gros- smith said monies raised at previous tournaments led some record cash him to expect a windfall of some $20,000 this year, well above the record $17,000 raised in 1991. Although the $18,000 raised fell short of that goal, Grossmith was not unhappy. “You tend to hope for $4,000 to $5,000 more every year,” he said, adding that factors like the local pulp strike had an effect on that total. “Given the current eco- nomic situation around Castlegar, we're delighted.” The tournament’s name- sake, Young said his annual trip to the Kootenays could be summed up in one word: fun. “There was a lot of that,” he said from Vancouver Mon- day. “I think everybody hada good time.” Young said the tourna- ment’s appeal is broadening, adding that the influx of golfers who came in from Kelowna in 1991 became an influx of golfers from Cran- brook this year. “It seems, bit by bit, every year a different area finds about the tournament and they want to be involved, and that helps,” he said. And although the 1992 tournament is just days old, Young said the wheels are al- ready in motion for 1993. “Putting it together starts right now,” he said, adding that he was meeting with Air B.C. Monday, one of the tour- ney’s sponsors, to talk about this year and look ahead to next. “Those things year-round.” happen News photo by Jonathan Green BUSINESS DIRECTORY Copy Deadline for August — 5 p.m. Friday, July 31 ¢ 365-7266 Brian L.
