Visit to Nuclear site results in BRENDAN HALPER Sun staff Action by Canadian officials on the feared Hanford Nuclear Reservation has followed hard on the heels of a visit there by four New Democratic Party MPs two weeks ago. Federal health and radiation experts are planning their own tour next month to assess the potential risk to Canadians from the highly contaminated site. It will be the first time the Canadian government has sent emissaries to the site of American atomic bomb plutonium production. Satisfaction at finally obtain- ing official Canadian action was expressed by Kootenay West— Revelstoke MP Lyle Kristiansen, who visited the site in response to concems of its close proximity to the Central Kootenays. Hanford is located about 200 miles southeast of Seattle. “It’s about time the Canadian government took a first-hand look at the Hanford situation,” Kristiansen said back at his Par- liament Hill office, “rather than just taking the Americans’ word that everything’s just fine. If the NDP MPs’ House questioning, letters and tour finally yielded this official technical visit next month, we are very pleased to have played that role.” Kristiansen went to Hanford Ministry to apply logging strategies BRENDAN HALPER Sun staff British Columbia’s Minister of Forests Dan Miller and Minister of Environment, Lands and Parks John Cashore announced on Monday the decision to apply log-around Strategies to portions of the Cariboo Mountains and Hasty Creek, near Silverton in the Slocan Valley. The decision enables the newly-formed Commission on Resources and Environment (Core) to carry out a second Phase of regional land-use plan- ning. Miller said timber harvesting in the Hasty Creek area will be deferred for 24 months. Hasty Creek residents and member groups of the Slocan Valley Watershed Alliance (SVWA) have taken a stand against the proposed timber har- vesting within their watershed area by Slocan Forest Products— last October 83 people were JOHN CASHORE arrested for blockading an access road leading to the area. According to Cashore, Hasty Creek is primarily a domestic watershed issue and the questions of water quality and domestic watershed policy will be given important consideration during See LOGGING 2A Kelowna contractor awarded job on Public Works Facility SHARLENE IMHOFF Sun Editor Castlegar City Council has awarded Advance Building Sys- tems Inc. of Kelowna the duty to design and begin construction of the new Public Works Facility in the Industrial Park. Council voted in favour of the recommendation during last Tuesday’s council meeting. Advance Building Systems Placed the lowest bid for the con- tract at $895,200. Other bids, which were sent from contractors Fame and Berg, were in excess of March 11 along with neighboring NDP MPs Lyle MacWilliam, Jack Whittaker and Sid Parker. They were given a tour of the most extensive nuclear develop- ment and waste storage location in America—tocated on a 1,450 square-kilometer reservation just 300 miles south of British Columbia, where 177 huge underground radioactive waste storage tanks have problems with leakage and venting. After his visit to the site, Kris- uiansen told the Castlegar Sun that he would be pressuring Ottawa to look into the Hanford Site, Hanford is infamous for Cold War plutonium production and HEU charge unfair labour practices HLRA spokesperson says union's claim ridiculous JASON KEENAN Sun staff The Health Labour Relations Association of B.C. (HLRA) has called for the immediate dis- missal of the Hospital Employ- ee’s Union’s (HEU) charges of unfair labour practices. The HEU has filed a list of complaints with the Industrial Relations Council (IRC). In that list, the union charges that the posting of bulletins outlining the HLRA’s positions in current con- tract negotiations between the two sides is an unfair labour Practice. “The union’s charges are ridiculous,” said Martin Liv- ingston, the HLRA’s Director, Communications. He said that the charges were an attempt by the union to generate some cheap publicity. “The union took_a shot-gun approach,” said Livingston. “Anything they didn*t-agree with, they dumped into their complaint to the Industrial Relations Coun- cil (IRC).” Livingston said the HLRA took precautions to engure their bulletins were within the labour laws. Lawyers looked at all the HLRA employee information bulletins before they were released, he added. According to labour laws and Precedents, Livingston said, the See DISPUTE 2A For all the local news and Sports — the Castlegar Sun $1 million. The current Public Works facility is located behind City Hall and plans to relocate and improve the yard to the Industrial Park, for a budgeted cost of $950,200., has come under fire from many Castlegar residents who claim the expenses are not warranted. Coalition Unaccepting Rash Bureaucracy President Mike O'Connor disagrees with the upcoming plans for the Industrial Park, claiming the City’s reasons See JOB 2A further action for deliberate release of radioac- tivity by the American military to see if the deadly cloud could be tracked, presumably to better fol- low Soviet nuclear efforts. The legendary 1949 “Green Run” experiment of this nature is thought to have caused many cancers and deaths near Hanford, and is being studied for its impact on Americans. Their study does not extend into Canada.
