ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE OF MAILS, ‘| that fully 1000 men will attend from Butte if the rate is secured that has practically been agreed upon. Fully 1000 men will ‘attend’ from the Coeur ‘d’Alené mining towns and 500 miners will dome down ‘from’ Rossland. Most of these have signified their intention’of in the street parade. Spokane, where there is a branch of the nights of Labor or any kind of a labor organization, is to be corresponded with and the leaders in the movement firmly believe that hundreds if not thousan will come from these smaller towns. Besides these a great host will take ad- vantage of the cheap rate to visit Spo- ane. —~_—- ROSSLAND’S CHURCHES. FOR SHAME SHUT UP. The Recoarp would not ro readily take issue with Canadians or Canadian news- papers about the conduct of this govern- ment towards the citizens of the United States, but we will not stand idely by and allow a demogogueof that country, through the columns of a newspaper he may control, advocate laws and meas- ures againet his own people, without calling upon him to answer. It ili be- comes the management of the Rossland Miner to take the lead in demanding that i be cnf against Americans who come here in good faith and are in every way com- plying with the laws of this country; and will use the strongest English lan- quage we can command in resenting the conduct of that sheet even though we heve. to go into the _priy: .. those responsible. Men, w! life and public conduct are above re- proach, might with impunity d» things that men who will desert their families, and their sworn obligations to their gov- ernment would or should refrain from doing, . The Recorp dare follow the coure,iu- dicated in this item, because it is right, and becauac it would be resenting - the wrongful conduct of an ill advised news- paper. —_——— DISTANCE LENDS ENCHANTMENT The report from Gold Commiesioner Thomas-Fawcett from Dawson City, in the Klondike country, duied June 15 does not indicate that country as rich as generally believed. Many of the miners are not able to pay the renewal fee of $100. In the face of this fact it looks strange that the Canadian govern- ment weuld proceed to impose a 10 and 20 per cent. royalty on the output of these mines, to say nothing of reserving every alternate claim. There is but lit- tle doubt that there will be much’ suffer- ing and privations, if not starvation by those who rush in there thie scason. Rossland and the Slocan will. yield more gold ‘and silver than'the Klondike country and the people’ who produce‘it will not be subjected to the difficulties of those who ge into the glacier region of thé north; Ita'surprising how young people have grown: all of a sudden since the poll: tax collector is making his rounds, ee Our morning contem»orary has been laying great stress upon its superiority on account of its telegraph service. It has given up all its “‘specidle” and four mornings out of five it announces « that tha “wires were down’? so they could not get any telegraph. This sheet of great pretenses is fast degenerating into @ very common place newspaper, which still costs twice as much money to keep alive ag it earns. Mayor Scott leaves tomurrow for a month to visit his family'and friends at his old home at Galt, Ont. Hw hag promised during his absence to see if any better offer for the debentures of this city can be secured. Mr. Scott isa man of means and is in touch with capital and Rossland will be benefited by his financial association. The Rec- op joins the citizens in Rossland in wishing him a pleasant successful trip and a safe and speedy return.
