This week's Retirees Day was a glorious day. There was not a breath of wind and the temperature was not oppressive; in other words, it was about as perfect a day for golf as one could wish for. The turnout was a respectable 43 and we played Bingo, Bango Bongo, closest to the pin on number five, long putt on number nine, plus low gross and low net Chris Christianson and Carl Osing were in charge and the winners were: closest to the pin on number five was Jack Buchanan who dropped bis tee shot about 18 feet from the pin, Chris Christianson finished off a m-footer for the longest putt on number nine, Romeo DiBiasio bad a 44. Next week Jack Buchanan and Gil Page will mastermind our production with the usual low gross and low net, closest to the pin on number nine and you will only use one wood of your own choice. See you all on the tee! Last weekend we helped to stage the annual Rossland Sl~Pitch tournament. Chuck Harkness, Garnie Best and I acted as bartenders between games in the Rossland Curling Rink and we got to meet a lot of our friends we have made over the years while helping on that particular job. They come back year after year to enjoy the wellknown Rosslancl hospitality. Over the years, we can now call a lot of them by their first names. They come from ~points of the compass in B.C., and we ~ve a team from Calgary every year too. The B.C. teams come from Vancouver, Armstrong, Salmon Arm, Vernon, Kamloops and Elkford. Three teams represented Rossland this year, the Uplander Hotel, Legion Royals, and Super-Scrap. The ultimate winner was Super-8crap, reversing a decldion of last year when they fell before the Calgary team. This yearrSuper-Scrap was not to be denied as they went down the line undefeated to take our Vernon A. NA. F. in the semi-final to wind up in a ding-dong struggle with the Animals from Cowtown and capture all the marbles. The Calgary squad bad beaten Vancouver's Perogy Power to gain the final. The Scrap team was made up of some pretty good ball players, a run down of the team members sounds like a Wbo'1-Wbo of Rossland athletes. Guys like cam and Ross Jensen, Bob and Joe 1.anussi, Ken Dixon, Bobby Profili, Claire Anderson, Butch Turner, Donny Brandt, Jimmy . Ling, Pete Bourchier, Richie Samuelson, Rick ALonzo, Wayne Layboume and Cary Campbell. They did a pretty good job of bringing the big silverware back home to Rossland. There were guys on . some Rossland teams that came a long way to play in this tourney. Ross Jensen bas been working up at Tumbler Ridge prior to coming down here to play, Bruce Holm who played on the Legion team flew in from Halifax, N.S. where he is a real estate salesman as a side line to getting further education in accounting at university. You know, Rossland keeps bringing 'em back every year. Would you say we have something special here? I would! One happy guy after it was all over was a former Ross1and Capilano, now playing out of Kamloops for the Kats, "Swervin" Mervyn Jensen, in the draw for the double cassette player by YORX, Viv Thompson drew Merv's name out of the bat I don't know who was happier, Merv, or bis kids! I got a call from a Legion member the other evening who wished to know what I•thought of the possibility of starting the Legin picnic up again. Over the past few years this idea bas lain dormant. We used to have some good ones. The proposal was to see if there could be any interest generated in an idea to make it a communal affair with invitations going to Legion branches around the area. Branches such as Trail, Castlegar, Fruitvale and Salmo etc., are having a revolving schedule where we would hold it in Rossland one year, then in Trail, etc., the next. Anyone with any suggestions in support of this idea could give me a call at 382-5205 or drop a line to Box 983, Rossland and I can them al ThiB week's Retirees Day was a glorious day.
