An unpublished study compares the mortality rates of children through age 19 by neighborhood in Canadian cities, measuring the median income levels in each one using information from the 1986 census. The results of the study appeared recently in the Toronto Globe and Mail In the poorest urban areas — those in the lowest 20 per cent of income — 90.6 children out of every 100,000 died In the wealthiest 20 per cent of areas, just 58.1 children per 100,000 died. However, mortality rates among children of the poor have dropped for some causes of death since 1971, the last time Statistics Canada examined the issue, preliminary findings showed. Primarily, the children are obser ving indiscreet lovemaking or being used in sexual acts by adults in the home, he said “When a kid goes through the motions of imitating an adult in some some of sexual behavior, you know that he has been exposed to it in one way or another.”* Dr. Charlie Ferguson, director of the Child Protection Centre, said his staff is seeing an increasing number of parents who are concerned about their children’s overt sexual play PARENTS WORRIED “There's enough of this that parents are bringing them in, wondering why they’re acting this way,’’ Ferguson said Reports of the ‘‘acting out"’ behavior are also coming from staff at day-care centres and nurseries, said Ferguson, who feels television may be a culprit, with children watching por nographic videos or satellite channels. Ferguson said parents, whilé shy to own up to having pornographic material on hand, must be told to keep the stuff out of reach of children. While they may be discreet in their viewing, a teenaged babysitter may be watching the stuff without ensuring the little ones are sleeping, he said McCraw said the actions of the children are disturbing since it must be reinforced as wrong to the child as well as prevented for the sake of the other children who are being led into the game Depending on the circumstances, the child may need to be pulled from their home, or the activities in the house may simply need ta be changed. Other authorities, such as police and child and family services agencies, are involved if abuse is suspected, McRae said.
