Real taste : and real pleasure are what + smoking’s all about."” : That was the message of a ¢ slick, sophisticated advertise- > ment in a popular magazine I i was skimming while waiting > recently in a doctor's office. Of course, down below in : clear but. hardly conspicuous ‘ print was -another message: : “The Surgeon. Geteral has } determined that cigarette smok- ting is dangerous to your : health.” But who cares about a. } little matter like health hazard when “real taste and real ¢ pleasure" are to be gained? : The truth of course is that : + while cigarette smoking may be ‘avery pleasant habit, it is at the same time a very foolish habit. Robert W. Riis, writing in the Reader's Digest, reports: that his investigation of smoking convinced -him smoking is dan- gerous, and, worse—stupid. Surely it is significant that at first the Surgeon General of the United States made it neces? sary for cigarette- manufacturers to State, “Warning, the Surgeon General has determined that cigarette smoking may be harmful to your health.” Now the warning states, ‘IS harmful to your health." In other words, Smoke at your own risk. The evidence that cigarette smoking is a positive factor in both tung cancer and cardio- vascular diseases is massive. One researcher worked out the. following rather graphic computations: “The heavy ‘smoker pays with 34, 6 minutes of life foreach cigarette he smokes. The pack- a-day smoker pays with 11.5 hours for each pack he smokes,"” But the deleterious effects of cigarette. smoking hardly need to be argued. Thousands of people die every year from diseases directly or indirectly + attributable to it. That is a human: tragedy. But that is not the main point of i this column, What troubles me deeply in this whole area is the appalling example left by adults on our youth. Iobserve mothers sitting over coffee at -a restaurant expelling lungfuls of smoke in the faces of their small children. I see fathers giving precious hours to their sons but all the while sucking on a cigarette. What disturbs me even more is to see coaches in soccer or hockey or whatever teaching their teams the rules..of, the game, good sportsmanship and the like, while they themselves puff away on a cigarette. Or Scout and Guide leaders dis- playing their inability to contro! their habit, even in the presence of youngsters they are seeking to develop. Doesn't the law- of love warrant the opinion that the least they could do would be to refrain when in the presence of impressionable youth? Are not parents and coaches and youth leaders interested in character building?
