For years, the Canadian brewing industry operated much the same way the Canadian banking system has with a uniform distribution system, pricing and oven a‘ standard bottle. The three largest breweries — John Labatt Ltd. of : London, Ont., Carling O'Keefe Ltd. of Toronto and the Molson.Cos, Ltd. of Montreal — have between them 98 per’ cent of the market, Their rate of market growth was as high as five per cent in the early 1970s although in recent years it has averaged - only about one per cent, compared with about three per cent in the.U.8, ~ Competition for ma:ket share has ‘always, been intense Be. att ses among the Big Three. The beer industry's target group is between the age of 19 and 40 and as members of the baby. boom grow older they're switching to white wine and liquors. “We've all heard of marketing wars before and we're © going to see beer wars this summer,” says Robert Shoniker, a Toronto consultant to the brewing industry in Canada and the United States. “And I think you're going to see an interesting battle.” Carling. O'Keefe, .in. an aggressive campaign to win + market share, has already fired the first shot by signing a licensing agreement with Miller Brewing Co. of Milwaukee to market the best-selling U.S. brand, Miller High Life, in Canada. It has rights to other Miller brands. _ MOLSON FIGHTS BACK Molson has introduced’ Export Light while Labatt has introduced; a premium beer. in Ontario, Labatt Classic. Classic and Miller are in American-style tall bottles, instead of the traditional stubby Canadian bottles, a factor Shoniker’ believes will come into play in the upcoming marketing wars. Analyst Leo Soenen of the Winnipeg-based investment firm of Richardson Greenshields of Canada Ltd., says 1983 beer sales will likely be three per cent higher than those in - 1982. But then; it won't take much to show an improvement from last year, he says... But after recovering from the recession, the brewers will get back to their hunt for growth and they're lucky if.” they : see ‘much more than one-per-cent growth in coming: ‘industry: needs ‘is-.an. injection of = ‘this: ‘says Shoniker, adding that most of ‘any: competitors: ** . Current conditions ‘Bava: already: produced changes i in the industry, with Carling O'Keefe emerging as a winner by increasing its share of the national market by a percentage point.’ Just one percentage point i in this industry represents about 180,000 barrels of beer. LABATT HAS LEAD As things stand now, John Labatt Ltd. leads with 36.8 per cent of the market. Molson has falled a point in the past year to 35.3 per cent and Carling O'Keefe has 25.8 per cent. _ Soenen says light beer may be the brewers’ route to salvation as it has been for the American industry, where , the calorie-reduced products accounts for 15 per cent of the market. Light beer has been favored by many older drinkers in the U.S., he says, and it may be a way to reclaim some of the market in Canada, where it accounts for between five end eight per cent of the market. Soenen says if it weren't for light beer in the US., ‘the American three-per-cent growth figure would actually be, about 0.8 per cent. However, Sandra Lowe of the investment firm Bell Gouinlock Ltd. said there will likely Canadian consumption of light beer.
