Every little bit counts as far
as Maurice Diotte is con-
cerned.’ The . unemployed
draftsman, who won $1.2
million in a lottery last year,
has since collected more than
$11,000 in jobless benefits.
Diotte, 44, who with his
wife, Barbara, co-owns and
operates a variety store, has
received federal unemploy-

ment cheques of $424 every. —

two weeks despite the fact he
is a millionaire.

Employment Department
officials in Ottawa say it’s all
perfectly legal — néither lot-
tery winnings nor inheri-
tances are considered when
determining eligibility
benefits.

But the extra income won't
be trickling in any more. Di-
otte’s benefits ran out last
week, shortly before the an-
niversary last Sunday of his
$1,216,039.30 Lottario win in
August 1984.

When he hit the jackpot,
Diotte had just been laid off
from his draftsmen’s job at
Arvid Machine Tools inWind-
sor.

Asked how he felt about
collecting benefits, Diotte
says, “I felt good about it.

“I paid into it for 20 years,”
he said in an_ interview.
“These are my benefits and
I'm entitled to them,

“I don’t know what all the
fuss is about. My situation
isn’t any worse than all those
retirees who file and collect
unemployment

ENDED SEARCH

A story in the: Windsor
Star at the time of his big win
told of how Diotte and his
wife “jokingly tore up the
help wanted ads . . . ending
his three-week search for a
job.”

Asked this week
would consider returning to
work if called back to Arvid,
Diotte said, “Are you kid-
ding? Not now.”

A requirement for getting
unemployment benefits is the
ability of the recipient to be
“ready, willing and able” to
accept work, said a depart-
ment spokesman.

Officials said they may in-
vestigate Diotte’s ownership
of the variety store and his
willingness to seek employ-
ment.

Records of the depart-
ment’s local placement unit
show there were 23 job or-
ders for mechanical drafts-
men in Windsor last. year.

Meanwhile, the Diottes
and their two children —
Kimberly, 12, and Jeffrey, 13
— still live much as they al-
ways have, in the back of the
small store they have oper-
ated for the last nine years.

bombs were exploded in an
unsuccessful attempt to open
several coin-operated vend-
ing boxes around the city.

The owner of one dial-a-
bomb computer visited Prit-
chard after reading in a
newspaper that police were
worried about his system. He
told police he had stopped
using the program.

Police said whoever deton-
ated the pipe bombs July 30
and 31 may ‘have used the
person's system, althoigh
the computer owner was not
involved.

“There’s a more sophis-
ticated system,” Pritchard
said. “It's far more advanced
than his.”
