As we go along we come upon another large body of ore of very high grade. Here a drift turns south for about 145 feet, all in solid ore and running as high as $100 per ton; then the drift de- flects tothe eaac for a distance of 160 feet, continaing in the solid ore body, where we come upon the men at work in ag fine a body of beautiful sulphite ore as one ever Inoked upon. This solid mass of 1ich ore has been drifted in for some time, and it is believed and said to contain about an acre of ground. There are no signs of either hanging or foot walls. The entire drift and crosscuts are in solid ore of a very fine quality and high grade. We might here remark that this rich strike is what caused the metry twinkle to appear in the manager’s eye, and right well it should as this late exposure indicates one of the largest. and richest ore bodies ever discovered in the history of the camp. g * Returning to the main tunnel we stopped at the extreme end, where an incline shaft comes down from the sur face, giving good air advantages. This shaft is aleo being sunk below the level of the tunnel and is now down a little over 100 feet below the tunne]. It will be continued on down far into the great deep. A hoist is now in operation in the tunnel at this point. At the mouth of thia Incline shaft on the surface will be erected an electric hoist to handle all the ores of the west end of the mine, and which now pass out of the main tunnel. It is the inten- tion of the company to put the new plant in this summer. We have now been »retty well through the mine and find that there are about 6,000, feet, or over a mile, of underground workings and quite a lot of surface work MINING NEWS. BANDON. The Florence Mining and Milling com- pany in Skull valley is reported to be prospering. President F. Crowton re- - ceived a letter yesterday from J. Hein- rich, who is doing drifting in the. mine under contract. ot . Mr. Heinrich wrote that after croes- cutting the vein he had struck a big body of rich ore and had gone through 16 feet of it... The indications were that --- the strike was a good one. Mr. Heinrich added that it looked as if 100 feet would .. not crogacut the ore body. So, The shaft is now 70 feet deep, the bot- tom apparently being the footwall. Drif- ting is going on from the bottom of the . shaft. YMIR. : A lead 80 feet widefhas been uncovered at the Blue Bird mine on Wild Horse creek. The values run about $19 in gold and silver. A tunnel is now in 70 feet and shows up splendidly. . On the Spirit claim, adjoining the Blue Bird, a tunnel hus been run about 80 feet showing similarly to that of the Blue Bird. A great deal of development work will be done in thia neighborhood this summer, = . BOUNDARY, The Monte Cristo and Monte Carlo claims in Greenwood camp have been bonded by '[. Roderick to J. Lucy, and two shifts of men have been put to work developing. . Arich strike is reported to have been made on the Lenbrock claim in Dead- wood camp. This property joina the Mother Lode and the ledge is said to be over 50 feet in width and carries ore identical to that found on the Mother Lode, A 60-foot tunnel and s 30-foot also.. All the veins have a dip of from 27 to 70 degrees toward the north, and the trend of the ore chutes is invariably toward the east. There are from 6000 to 10,000 tona of ore on the dumps at present. “The Cantre Star was located on July 7, 1890, by Joseph Bourjious, and-.was the first claim staked and recorded in thiscamp. It isa full claim,-600 feet wide by 1500 feet long, and is now own- ed by the Centre Star Mining and Smel- ting company, with head offices in Butte, Montana. Z The late P. A. Largey, one of the wealthiest men of Montana, was presi- dent of the company, and Mr. Oliver Durant, general manager. The company shaft comprise the workinga so far on- the claim. . JEWISH FESTIVAL. Commemoration of the Passover Began Last Evening at 6 o’olock. ‘The Jewish: festival of ‘the ‘Passo (Pesach) commenced last evening at 6 o'clock. This-holiday is commemorative, of the time when the, children of Israel were li d. from Egyp' and passed through the Red sea. Usu- ally thd festival is observed. for seven days. During that time matsos_or un- leavened bread jeeaten, and though it is in no sence a period of fasting many atticles of food are forbidden. In. fact the strictly orthodox Jewa do not dur- has not decided aa yet whether it will build its own combination plant, consis- ting of mill, concentrator and smelter, or ship all their ores, but development will be continued with all possible speed. ‘We think it but fair in justice to Oliver Darant to state that we believe no more intelligent work has beon performed in the development of any mine or mines in the camp than that which has been done by Mr. Durant, who has had charge of the work since the mine was taken over by ite present owners, virtually from its inception, in all of which he has been ably assisted by his very capa- ble and long experienced mining fore- man, Mr. Peter Joyce, who has had years of practical experience in many of the principal minea of the United States. Oliver Durant’s reputetion as a thor- ough mining msn of lifelong experience has been fully suetained by the practical and economic manner in which he has tested the Centre Star properiy, and the mense body of did ore, Pp’ sulphites, and the crosscuta show it to be st least 70 by 300 feet in area. This ore will run, 6o Mr. O. Durant says, ap- proximately $20 per ton. What is called the South ledge Nes about 175 feet south of the main ledge, is 80 inches in width and of very good values. Going north again to about 275 feet north.of the main vein we find another ledge of about five fect in width, beau- tifal ore, which rans about $30 per ton. Then on again 175 feet further north brings us to the North vein, which is about 40 feet wide, excellent looking ore, carrying values from $20 to $40. At this pointan incline shaft from the surface intersects the north drift ot a depth of abont 320 feet. Here also is where the Iron Mask winz intersects the Centre Star tunrel about 20 feet north of the incline shaft of the Centre Star. - ‘What is known ss the North tunnel, which runa in the ledge about 700 feet, also taps the workings at this point. We leave thiu. drift, return to the main tunnel, and continne on westerly right along in ore ailthe way. Crosscuts from time to time appear, whick upon inves- tigation indicate pleirly tho grest amount of ore blocked out; in fact there are hundreds of thousands of tons of ore fal results of the vigorously con- ducted work under his superintendence, which has contribt.ted so largely toward making the Centre Star a shipper and dividend payer, is x:one sufficient evi- dence of his ab:lity and good judgment. ing the continuance of the festival use any culinary articles that have been in use previously during the year, but bave an entire new eet of cooking utensils - and dishes which are kept for use during the Passover week. Religious services are held in the ayn- sgogues on the eve of the Passover, on the next day andalso at the end of the week, . ——- BOUNDARY JUBILANT. ‘W. F. Smith Talks of the Good Corbin’s Toad ‘Will Dothe Country. Ww. F. Smitb, ove of the heaviest mine owners and operators in the Boundary creek district, arrived in the city yester- day and expressed much gratification over the fact that the. charter had been granted for the Kettle River Valley railroad. “It means much for the Boundary creek mines,” ssid he. “It would be diffculs to say when we would have had arailroad if this charter had been re- fased. At any rate we should have been atthe mercy of one line. ““The argument advanced by Mr. Blair on the floor of the house that there was either business enough for two roads or not enough for one was goodone. We If there isa chaace of bringing that mine toahigher standard than that which it now bolda the interests of the parties whom he represents will not suf- fer in consequence of incompetency or unintelligent work. So much of the future of this great mine depends upon the development of the ore reducing facilities that the Re- cord and all others interested in precious metal mining in this camp cannot but hope for the early, large and permanent success of suitable and adequate milling, concentrating, smelting and refining conveniences for the handling of Ross- land’a varied ores. Le Roi Dividend. At the regular inonthly meeting of tbe Le Roi stockholders held last Tues- day night in Spokane, a dividend of $50,000 was declared for the snonth. ‘Thia brings the total dividends declared to date up to t'.e grand total of $825,000. Afall line of carpets and linolerma in sight all-ready to be mined and need two roads and we shall have them. The Corbin line will not haul mnch ore ofthe Boundary creek district. Smel- ters will be erected et home. We have all the fluxes necessary, and there could be no better location than Greenwood fora smelter. The road will haul sup- plies in and matte out. Mining will take on new activity now since the road ig assured,” Iron Colt Sale. Mrs P. Burns, J. F. McCrae, T. G. Holt, William Mackenzie and others who own the controlling interest in the [ron Colt mine on Columbia 4jKootenay mountaia have given sn option to an English syndicate and it is id to he as good asa sale.
