We will gladly change your ‘‘ad" every issue if copy is presenced before 16 a. m. Conservatives considered a change desirable in order to clear the air. Three premiers, Sir John A. Mac- donald, Sir John Th and Sir Judging from reports from Nome, such as that published in the Recorp from Mr, Reagh, similar John Abbott hadbeen removed by the grim reaper during those years, and it is surprising that the party held onto office so long. Naturally there were divisions and internal dissensions, These and other caus- es contributed to the defeat of 1896. A marvelous change has been wrought. Today the Conservative party from the Atlantic to the Pa- cific is united and enth in its iti are going to prevail there. The di.covery of gold in the ravines demonstrates the pres- ence of another formation besides that found on the beach, The coarse gold which moves only with the earth in which it is imbedded indicates its home in neighboring ledges of gold-bearing quartz, So that both at Nome and in the Klon- dike it appears that people were advocacy of those principles which have built up and made Canada pros- perous, The campaign in eastern Canada has set the heather on fire, and Mr. Tarte, the minister of public works, admits that the success of his party is in the hands of his French compatriots of Quebec. With all his old time vigor Sir Charles Tupper has infused new life into his followers in the east. His meetings are everywhere enthusias- tic. and yudging from the published reportsin the Toronto Globe, the leading Liberal journal, the Liberals are getting the worst of it. The young blood of the Conservative party has been stirred up by. Hugh John Macdonald, who is greeted everywhere with the warmth and ffection which ch ized the re- ceptions to the old chieftain, Sir John A., himself. Hon. Mr. Foster is analyzing the record, of the gov- ernment in his trenchant: style, so forcibly, indeed, that many old time Liberals feel very keenly the decep- tion, of which they are the victims, practiced by the ministry of all the talents. It is not surprising, in view of these facts, that the papers supporting the government in Brit- ish Cuiumbia are whistling to keep up the courage of the Liberals, and perchance to deceive those who may vote for the first time. Do not be deceived. The Liber- al party has sown for four years,— nobody knows what—but it is going to reap a-bountiful crop of thistles and defeat. The govern- ment is doomed. The electors know that the Liberals have had just as much to do with making this country prosperous,as the man in the moon. The lunar gentleman At any rate it is all moonshine to seriously discuss the claims of either party. The Electors of Yale- Cariboo, must calmly consider the issues irrespective of the brag and bluster of the Liberal organs, keep- ing in mind the advice of the late Mr. Gladstone, who spoke feelingly, to abstain from betting on horse races and electors. There is an uncertainty about both that has brought the head of many prophetic editor in sorrow, to the stool of repentance. The Conser- me THE COMING ELECTION. The Republican party in the United States, according to Senator Hanna, 18 threatened with defeat owing to the apathy of. President McKinley's own followers. The party organs have been preaching in season and out of season, that the Democrats could never hope to win, because of the prosperous condition of the country, and great hold of the ad- ministration upon the people, until the Republicans themselves have been lulled into a peaceful slumber, and an indifference that is consid- ered dangerous. Over confidence has lost many clections the world over, and the Liberal organs in Can- ada taking their cue from their Re- Publican neighbors, are attempting to inspire the Liberals with hope, and at the same time discourage the Conservatives by shouting, vic- tory! when the result is, to say the least, exceedingly doubtful. Since confederation, thirty-three years ago, the Liberal party has only held office nine years. Com- pared with the twenty-four years of Conservative government, it is evi- dent that the people of Canada are largely conservative, The Conser- vative party was defeated in 1873 because of the Pacific scandal. In 1896 the Conservative party met de- feat, mainly because of its adher- vative di Mr. MacNeill whose election is assured, will be one of the supporters of the incom- ing government, with whom the interests of this constituency will be safer, than in the hands of the Liberal government, which prom- ises public buildings but does not build them. The Conservative party may be trusted to do its duty, to fulfil its promises, and to wit this election. . THE KLONDIKE AND NOME The latest and most reliable re- ports from the Klondike seem to show that it is passing through a period very‘similar to that exper- ienced by the older gold producing territories. It has had its period may in fact be entitled to more cred-'| -/it. boll who i the only mineral resources were to be found in the surface gravel or on the tundra, aad that these would be exhausted within a year or two. In other words it looks now as if both districts are udded to the perma- nent gold producing jerritery of the world, ‘ A PRODIGAL GOVERNMENT. The revenue for the Dominion for the year ending June 30, 1900, was recently stated to be $49,000,000. It now appears that it was much larger. Mr. Fielding, the finance minister, in a recent address at Hal- ifax stated that the total revenue for the past fiscal year, was $50,927,- 941. Yet the Laurier government contrived to spend all this and $1,- 785,000 besides, In his address Mr. Fielding claimed a surplus of about $5,000,000; but such a claim is unwarranted and misleading. It can be arrived at only by counting fragments charged to the con- solidated fund, which améunted to $43,000,001 To that has to be added payments on the capijal and for the South African war. The fact is brought. out clearly that the government, with a revenue which exceeded. by $14,500,000 that of any previous year, did not make both ends meet by $1,785,000. Telephone 86. P.O.
