Bingle copy + +$10.00 5.00 TUESDAY, JULY 6, 1897. It isa notorious fact that the people of Nelson never mies an opportunity of saying disparaging things about Ross- land, while Rossland has had nothing but kind words for Nelson and all other outside towns. It is of but little concern to us that the people or papers of that sleepy old town do not like the manner in which the Recogp calls attention to these facts. Whatever faults the Rec- op may have, one of them is not in be- ing misunderstood. —_—_——_— THE GLORIOUS FOURTH. of the Prog S Exciting Races. A large float carrying a number of Rossland’s school girls sitting on a bed of evergreens and flowers. They were as much admired as any feature of the parade and were greeted with cheers. TRE AFTERNOON SFORTS. Che sports started promptly at 1:30 and moved gaily along. Although the weather wag none of the best and the streets were spotted with great mud puddles, there were no hitches in the program. The judges for the foot races were Jerry Spellman and Dan Thomas; starters J. Wilaon, J. W. Hartline and Eber C. Smith. Falowing are the winners: ard dash for boys under 9—First, renee $3; second, Isaacson, $2; third, Mitthesey, hl Boys’ suck race—First, Noseda, $3; second, dine, $2; third, Fullerton, $1. eack race—Albert Falkney first; Willie Falkney, second, Calvin Fi third. innigan, : Gee Lee, first, $10; The sleepy old Nelaon Miner proposes to invoke the law, if the Recorp does not stay within the time beaten path of Canadian journalism. That sheet is welcome to all the jewels it can gather along # highway traveled so long. The Recorp prefers to go prospecting for it- self in new fields and is content with the discovery that the public approves ita course. Our morning contemporary might oc- cupy the pinnacle of its imaginary tower of grandeur with more grace, in its at- tempting to ignore the Recorp, if it did not so readily print what other papers say about us. This shows a disposition to resent our little pleasantries without the courage to do sn. By the conduct of the Nelson fire company in not replving to the invita- tion of either the Rossland fire company orthe Fourth of July committee, it would appear that a few lessonson man- ners would not be out of place over there. INCIDENTS OF BACES. 2 The prospectors’ race on First avenue was one of the unique features of the day. Their 5U-pound packs seemed to hinder them very little. At the finish, however, they tumbled over each other ina heap and Jerry Spellman, one of the judges, was found at the bottom. 4 thinamen’s race was a thing to wonder at. They started well up the hill on Washington street and flew away like the wind. Their cues streaming behind and garments flapping wildly, made a comical picture. jense walls of humanity lined the avenues wherever races were held, and occasioned a great deal of bother tothe judges. Every- thing passed off quietly. No drunken men were seen, and not a single arrest was reported up to7 o’clock this even- ing. President Knight says the present | 99 strike is little else than a fight against starvation. BAD OUTLOOK HERE. Spring Valley, Ill., July 5.—The min- ers of Spring Valley this morning en- tered upon a strike and the ending of it is wrapped in uncertainty. The feeling among the leaders is that the fight will be shert and sharp, but that they must win out, They are in poor shape to stand a month’s lockout. This strike affects in this field fully 4,500 miners. MEN WALK OUT. Streator, Ill., July 5.—The coal min- ers of Streator district, with a total of about 15.000 men, have laid down their tools in answer to the call of the na- t:onal association. XO STRIKE THERE. Bellefonte, Pa., July 6.—There will be no strike of the miners in the Clearfield dlistrict, The employes there held a meeting and decided to take no notice of the call to go out, but to work tomorrow as usual, oo SEVEN FEET DOWN. Work of the Steam Drillon the Bluff on Columbia avenue. Rand’s steam drill on West Columbia bluff has bored over a dozen holes since starting to work. Many of these are over seven feet deep. They will be blasted away one at a time, and great care will have to be exercised against accidents. The drill proves an irresistible attrac- tion to many people, who throng about it all day, and it is well worth watching. It is a great labor-saving apparatus and will do in one hour what two men could hardly accomplish in a day. ‘The apparatus sits upon three heavily weighted tripode. The steal drill is held in aclasp which works in the same way as a piston rod on anengine. When the steam, which is furnished by a donkey engine, is turned on the driil is inted towards the rock and held in place by one man. A large screw regulates it a the drill obtains depth and owin, twist inside the Apparatus the si i is driven a turn with each strike. Three men are all that are needed torun the machine. Murdock was in the box for Spokane and Coffman for Kaslo. Both were hit rather freely, but excellent support by both teams kept down what: ord inarily would have resulted in large scores, The game Sunday resulted in a score of 18 to 10. ANOTHER LE ROI DIVIDEND. At a meeting held in Spokane Satur- day night the Le Roi company declared another dividend payable July 6 of $25,- 000. The total dividends so far amount to $450,000.
