General Education course may be taken in a term. The course entitled “‘“Foundations for Enquiry”’ is compulsory in the first term. Students entering the College directly from Grade XII must take the two courses some time in the first four terms, but are strongly advised to take them in the first two. Students entering from Grade XIII, or with credit for work already completed, must take these courses in their first two terms of attendance at College. Any student who has completed the two required courses is free to audit additional General Education courses. “Foundations for Enquiry” is a course designed to orient students to college life. If it is to be worthy of the name, Higher Education must deeply involve the learner in the whole process of enquiry which is in truth the source of all knowledge. The student must come to understand this process and to know the methods and tools by which it is carried out. He should also gain some appreciation of the nobility of its purpose. INDEPENDENT STUDY Any student, in collaboration with a faculty member and with permission of the Principal, may formulate a legitimate area of academic or technical inquiry into a course programme for which credit will be given provided the work has been success- fully completed to the satisfaction of the Dean. TRANSFER FROM SELKIRK COLLEGE The following is a statement from the Registrar and Secretary of Senate of the University of British Columbia. “The University will accept students on transfer from Selkirk College on the same basis as students transferring from the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser Uni- versity or any other recognized college. Students who in the past would have sought admission following Grade 13 may now seek admission following two semesters of study at Selkirk College and will be considered on standing shown on transcripts of record issued by the College. A student who chooses courses at the College that are appropriate to his academic objective at University and who obtains adequate standing in them will be accepted for further studies at the University under the same conditions that apply to a student who has taken all his post-secondary studies at the University. “The situation is similar for students transferring to the University following four semesters at the College.” Admission Officers from the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University and Notre Dame University of Nelson have given similar assurances that students will be accepted on transfer from Selkirk College under the same conditions that apply to those who have taken all of their post-secondary studies at the Universities, pro- vided that they have obtained adequate academic standing. Discussions are being held with the British Columbia Institute of Technology with respect to the admission of students completing the first year of study in the Applied Arts and Science Division at Selkirk College. 23
