News Staff The B.C. government has filed a grievance with the Offict of the Unit- ed States Trade Representative protesting recent U.S. actions against Canadian exports on softwood lumber. The federal government eliminated a 15 per cent export tax on the lumber headed to the U.S. in early October. Forests Minister Dan Miller stated in a news release that the U.S. govern- ment suspended customs clearance of some lumber imported into the U.S. “U.S. actions taken in response to Canada’s termination of the softwood lumber Memorandum of Understand- ing are inconsistent with U.S. law,” SCORE BIG WITH — S SuperValu Your satisfaction is our main concern Lumber levies under attack Miller stated. B.C.’s lumber industry is exempt from the export tax, because the province has raised stumpage rates — fees the government charges for tim- ber harvested on Crown land — to get its export tax lifted. , B.C.’s lumber mills do not benefit from the termination of the ex- port tax, but are hurt by any U.S. re- - taliation. “Canada had a legal right to termi- nate the MOU,” Miller stated. “The U.S. had no right to suspend customs clearance of lumber imported into the U.S. from B.C. and the rest of C » Pa Castlegar Junior Rebels —— A Winning Combination!! Rebels’ stock down after first quarter A quarter way through the season, the Rebels are a long way behind the leaders in the KIJHL’s West Division News Staff A quarter way through the Kootenay International Ju- nior Hockey League season the Castlegar Rebels aren’t panicking just yet. There is, afterall, 30 games to go in the season. Still, with a 3-7 record in the first 10 outings, the Rebels find themselves nine points out of third place, 10 points out of second and 14 out of first in the KIJHL's West Division. The club may be approach- ing the day when it has to win to keep its playoff hopes alive. And there is-little doubt the Rebels have to start winning consistently. Last weekend’s games were an example of the team’s season to date. The Rebels lost to the West Division leading Beaver Valley Nite Hawks 5-2 in Beaver Val- ley Friday night but came back to beat the Nelson Maple Leafs 6-5 at the Community Complex Saturday night. The Rebels have beaten both those teams at separate times during the season, but have yet to score back to back victories. Kevin Nisse scored unas- sisted and Mike Hunter scored from Nino DaCosta and Mike Jodoin for the Rebels in the loss to Beaver Valley. The Rebels outshot the Nite Hawks 32-26, but BeaverVal- ley made the most of their chances , especially in the sec- ond period when they scored on three of six shots on Joel Casey, Aftera a scoreless first peri- od, the Rebels fell behind 3-1 after two and never managed asustained attack in a penal- ty-filled third period. Against Nelson, Derek Lal- dond scored the winner for Castlegar with six minutes re- maining in the third period. The Rebels erased a 3-2 first-period deficit with goals from Dave Dollack, Hunter and DaCosta, with his second of the game. Cory Ross, who was wear- ing the captain’s C on his jer- sey against Nelson, scored the other goal for Castlegar. Lalonde set up a pair of goals for the Rebels, while Kevin Leiman, Dave Dyball, Dustin Rilcof, Nisse and Da- Costa added single assists. Castlegar had 43 shots at Brian Jones in the Nelson net, while Casey stopped 27 shots to get the win. Two of the Rebels three wins this season have come against the Maple Leafs, who are closest to Castlegar in the West Division with 15 points. The team is coached by Ed Cooper, who had coached the Rebels for the past two sea- sons. The Rebels have the second worst record in the eight-team KIJHL ahead of the East Di- vision’s Elk Valley Raiders who have just two wins and a tie in 14 starts this season. Where You Belong
