B2_Castlogar News September 4, 1991 SIDELINES By CasNews Staff Nicklaus back at Open Oakville, Ont. — The Bear is back for another bite at the golf course he designed. He doesn't expect to have a big meal. d Jack Nicklaus, who designed the 7,102-yard, par-72 Glen Abbey course that plays host to the Canadian Open golf championship Thursday through Sunday, will once again try to win the only ifi national ionship that's elud- ed him in his illustrious, 29-year professional career, The Golden Bear has, finished second seven times, in 1985, 1984, 1981, 1976, 1975, 1968 and 1965. He's also been third twice, fourth once and fifth two times. The two third-place finishes, in 1983 nd 1967, were one stroke behind playoff- bound finishers. “What I get this week is what I deserve unless I play really well,” he said after accepting a painting of himself to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the opening of Glen Abbey. “I really haven't prepared myself as I normally would.” Homegrown field is set Oakville, Ont..— There are 21 Canadians in the field of 156 golfers who'll tee it up Thursday in the 82nd Canadian Open. Leading the Canadian contingent are the four regular Canucks on the PGA tour — Dave Barr of Richmond, B.C., Dan Halldorson of Brandon, Man., Richard Zokol of Rich- mond, B.C., and Ray Stewart of Vancouver. The others are: amateur Rob Anderson of Kelowna, B.C.; Remi Bouchard, Brossard, Que.; Jeff Buder, Arnprior, Ont.’ Steve Chapman, Toronto; amateur Rick Keown, Mississauga, Ont.; Arden Knoll, Yorkton, Sask.; Jim Nelford, Vancouver; Mike Pero, Picton, Ont.; John Randle, Victoria; Gordon Smith, Dart- mouth, N.S.; Serge Thivierge, Laval, Que.; and Rick Todd, Toronto. ‘ Castlegar Judo Pole SHSS BASKETBALL | Registration LY BOTTLE \\\< Mon., Sept. 9 6:30 p.m. Twin Rivers Schoo! Early Bird 6 p.m., Regular Bingo 7 p.m. L.A. team seeing green By ED MILLS Staff Writer Green was indeed the color of money for an American baseball team and the organizers of the Grand Forks Credit Union International Labor Day base- ball tournament. It was also the color of grass, like that on the ball field at James Donaldson Park on Mon- day afternoon where the L.A. Valley Rangers accepted the $12,000 cheque as tournament champions. The Rangers beat Portland Taylor Electric 7-3 in the final making it the second straight year Portland has collected $6,000 as tourney bridesmaids. The match for third and fourth was no match at all as Team Toshiba of Japan humbled the San Diego Stars for the sec- ond time in a row with a 14-3 win, Japan, who the day before dumped the Stars 14-4, picked up $4,000 for the win while San Diego got $2,000 for fourth. Last year’s champions from Lake Tahoe finished fifth, while the Lewiston Truckers of New York were sixth and Seattle was seventh. Those three teams recouped their $800 entry fee and some spending money with purses of $1,200 each. The semi-professional and collegiate field of 12 teams included the host entry Grand Forks Gold, and Taiwan, Idaho, Chicago and another New York team who were all eliminated before the money round, Billed as one of the biggest baseball tournaments in North America as a result of the total purse $25,000, the 1991 edition of the tourney was the most suc- cessful in its 17-year history, said coordinator Larry Seminoff. “We broke every attendance record. It was the best ever,” said Seminoff, who estimated crowds of 3,000 over the six days of the tourney. “Over the 25-game schedule I would say we got about 60,000,” he said. Team Taiwan and Japan were back to the tournament after missing it last year and Seminoff said it’s the tourna- ment, not the prize money, that attracts the teams to the small community, “If you missed it then you wouldn't know. It’s a world-class tournament, that’s the reason they come. They come for the tournament.” Seminoff said he’s got some surprises for next year’s tour- ney, which could mean a Soviet team he contacted last year will be among the entries. ~ MAIN ST. — OPEN MONDAY TO FRIDAY MUFFLER ACTION & RADIATOR — 8A.M.-5 P.M. — WE NOW DO: FRONT END ALIGNMENTS AND BRAKES * Specializing in 4-Wheel Drives * 1501 Columbia Ave:, Castlegar © 365-5411 CasNews photo by Ed Mills San Diego Stars went through just about their entire pitching staff without any positive results in two lopsided losses last weekend to Team Toshiba of Japan in the Grand Forks-Credit Union International baseball tournament.
