Wednesda November 6, 1991 a 75¢ Mi 2 Sections, A & B Fight for ferry continues i Committee calls on NDP to honor pre-election promises Thomas Bink NEWS REPORTER Now that Mike Harcourt, Ed Conroy and the New Democrats are in power in B.C., the Robson- Raspberry Ferry Users Ad Hoc committee is calling on them to keep their promise to reinstate the Robson ferry. “Mr. Harcourt made a promise very publically that it would run again,” said committee lawyer Ter- ry Dalton. The Robson ferry service was terminated on April 28, 1988, when the ferry was moved to Ar- row Park. Since then, Dalton and acrew of ferry loyalists have been fighting to reverse the decision. Harcourt said on Nov. 6, 1988, that he would reinstate the ferry if elected as premier. “The premier (Bill Vander Zalm) has made a mistake and he should reverse it,” Harcourt said. “It is part of the highways system. Ifthey don't reopen it, we will.” THE NEWSPAPER Y Much discussion about the fer- ry has subsided with the promise of a $21 million bridge linking Robson to Castlegar by the fall of 1993. But the committee wants to see its ferry back in the interim say- ing it would improve resident safe- ty by making emergency services more accessible, offer an alternate escape route in the event of an in- dustrial accident, decrease truck traffic through Castlegar during Celgar’s modernization and ex- pansion project, and reduce the costs of constructing the bridge. Rossland-Trail MLA Ed Conroy promised during the recent provincial election that he would support reinstating the ferry. “It’s something that’s doable,” Conroy said at an all-candidate’s forum Sept, 25. “I'm going to strive to have the ferry put back in ser- vice. Dalton said he has discussed the issue with Conroy since Con- roy was elected as the ridings’s MLA Oct. 17, and said he is confi- dent Conroy will keep his promise. “Tm very optimistic,” Dalton said. “I think the chances of get- VE COME ting the ferry re- Fi stored are the fm best that they've § ever been.” Dalton has prepared a pre- sentation for Harcourt, Con- F roy and the new [fj Minister of High- ery Dalton ways, Art Char- ——————- bonneau, about the ferry situa- tion. He added that the ferry could reduce the amount of traffic on Columbia Ave. if it was reinstated, because Robson residents and peo- ple heading toward Nelson might use the ferry rather than risk a fender-bender on Sherbiko hill. “I would certainly use the Rob- son Ferry rather than take the risk that I would have to be slip- slicing » with everybody too,” Dal- ton said. Dalton also quashed a rumor that the ferry was going to be de- 8 “I was aware that one of the fer- ries was being cut, but I’m sure it wasn't the Robson ferry,” he said. OME TO FOR 44 60SECONDS le NEWS BRIEF Cominco cuts back on zinc production Cominco Ltd. announced Tuesday that it will be operating its zinc refinery at Trail at 90 per cent capacity because of poor world zinc prices.
