Last Oct. 20, I wrote'a column on Dr. John and Ruth
Hall and their impending journey for two years to Papua
— New Guinea. Dr. Hall-had always believed, he: said,
that anyone’ having the. skills and the “opportunity ‘and

his first months and impressions in New Britain ‘and they
reveal John as a man with perceptive eye and a vivid pen.
We enjoyed his deferiptions 3 of life in ‘that exotic and
dangerous land so much that we have presumed to print
them for the further enjoyment of his many friends and
" patients, knowing that they too are anxious to hear any
news and to'extend their-best wishes to he and Ruth.

As I sit down this evening to _ this letter a gentle .-
breeze blows onshore from the Pacific Ocean,. gentle ;
swells lap against the shore, and the palm trees, swaying ;

Islands. Time has passed so quickly. Every day has been
filled with new things and different happenings. Without

“We are located 80 km from the small city of Rabaul,
East New Britain, one of the islands in the Bismark
Archipelago.-The Catholic Mission of Vunapope is estab-
lished on about 600 acres ‘of land. Besides the 270 bed
hospital z at which I work, it includes a boat building shop,

School, as well ag a three-year nursing school.

The hospital is operated by Nuns of the Sacred Heart
Order. They are efficient, firm'and kind and administer a
very good hospital ‘complex, My primary responsibility is
surgery but I am also in charge of the female ward of 60
beds: This month I will be transferring to the Obstetrics
and Gynecology’ ward where we have approximately six
‘deliveries each ‘day. Rath’ is Working in the medical

‘We live in a pleasant little house situated about 500
feet above the ntission and about '4-mile from the beach.
‘The north side of the house is all louvered ‘glass and looks
out over the sea to the north and northeast, across

Recollections

New Ireland. -To the east arid west are miles and miles of ©

palin treés and -other jungle growth — coconut, ‘cocoa,

_, banana, papaya, mango and other tropical fruit trees

abound in all truly a if view. A
native village is close by ‘and most nights we can hear the
sound of drums and chanting as the natives carry ‘out,
their. rituals:| : . ’

The people are simple, happy and kind and laughing i.

‘the time. They are very black skinned ‘with black eyes
and bushy black hair. They are poor, living mainly from
their little jungle gardens and from fish, which is plentiful

in'these waters. They fish from. outrigger canoes ag well ~

as diving for oysters, crabs and other edible sea shell
foods. They raise some pigs and chickens. The venecr of
civilization is very thin however. and tribal warfare and

- ‘murder, is “somewhat more common that at home,

perpetrated by arrow, spear and | knife ‘wounds.

Everyone carries a bush knife — a useful instrument
about three-feet Iong, three inches wide and 1/8-inches
thick; It is used for hacking one’s way through the jungle,
cutting g grass, gardening, punishing wives and children —
and murder.»

+ Iam currently building a large outrigger cance
which will be rigged with a sail and rudder. Hopefully this
ship will get me far enough off shore to get amongst the

really big fish. Fishing gear is simple —a coke bottle with |

10-pound nylon line wrapped around the neck and a hook
with a hunk of fish attached for bait. Off one goes,
paddling hell-bent, and hopefully, success awaits before
the arms give out. If it gets too warm just slip over the

- side and have a swim! The canoes are carved from the

The weather during the dry season is hot
= quite impossible to be out in the mid-day equatorial
sun: However, now that the wet season has arrived it is
very pleasant, much like June or July in the Kdotenays. -
The rains are short in duration, mostly occurring at night,
with sunny warm days.

warm water in which one can hardly stand up! This sort
_ of violent weather is typical of equatorial storms in the
months of January, February and March, but fortunately
hort-lived ‘in duratidn. Actually, they aré truly

are everywhere in the jungle — all colors
— brown, blue, turquoise, emerald green with black trim,
mauve and pink. They come in all sizes up to.12 inches
across the wing span. Dragon flies are blue, green and
crimson as are most other flying insects. The pre-dawn
hours bring a'symphony of bird songs which are truly
difficult to describe. Every possible note and melody can
be heard. This, mixed with the croaking of frogs. and the
chirping of crickets and the early morning sounds of .
drums, is truly a maganificent orchestra, one which I will
record one day.
__ Shakes are, nocturhal and rarely seen. There are no

with one's bile since these will often

wild creatures but, as with our Grizzly bear, human
pressure has pushed them far back into the jungles. I
suppose the wildest of all the animals i in this country are
the humans,

Communism in Canada.

TORONTO (cP) — When Communism first reached its
head in Canada, the establishment: of the’ day reacted
violently although the body -of the. beast was a rag-tag,
almost pathetic band torn’ by internal strife.’ :

At first, both sides adopted policies that served conly to
arm their enemies.

The Communist | party, founded.at asecrot meeting in a
barn near Guelph, Ont., in May, 1921, chose to circulate
propaganda pamphlets to school children, 4 move guar-
anteed to inflame,even the most passive citizen.

And the establishment confronted with the revolu-
tionary ideas of a numerically insignificant party, opted for
knee-jerk repression on a scale that dismayed many and
even won some sympathy for the Reds.

The story is told in The Little: Band, a vivid,
tightly-written and well researched book by Lita-Rose
Betcherman, published by Deneau Publishers of Ottawa.

outgoing and brash Annie Buller and others.

Finally in 1981 came the big police roundup and trial of
nine leaders on charges of seeking the violent overthrow of
the gi and which led to the virtual banning of the

new chief constable, banned all public ther than in
English on grounds his undercover men couldn't understand
speeches in German, Finnish or Yiddish at these
multi-national gatherings. The ban didn't apply to religious
and ethnic ings — only Ci —and

supporters of free speech.

The police, the courts and the politicians, encouraged by
the newspapers of the day,.were quite willing to bend and
even break the law in their pursuit of the Red menace.
Generally, they enjoyed the backing of public opinion that
the ends justified the means.

For their part, the Communists did not really want to
see too much fair play from the establishment since it would
perpetuate the “foolish faith” of the Canadian working class

~ in the system and detract from the advantageous martyr

role they sought to play.

Buck told the court that capitalism was in the final stage
of turning fascist. Communism did not advocate violence, he
said, but simply reacted to it as employed by the ruling class
by keep workers in their place.

The prosecution, pointing to-the little band, told the
jury they were the general staff of a planned civil war.

All were convicted and sent to prison.

In conclusion, Betcherman finds fault on both sides.

The establishment, in panic, was uncaring about human
misery, solicitious only of its cushioned comfort, anxious
only to preserve its power, prosperity and privileges.

The Communists also did not care about the welfare of
the people, seeing the Soviet Union as their first loyalty and
seeking to malign and undermine other groups trying to

jailed as vagrants for disrupting traffic ey one judge
gave the opinion that under this bending of the law almost
all Torontonians were vagrants at one time or another —
even Santa Claus at the annual Christmas parade that
snarled traffic for hours.

Betcherman does a remarkable job of telling a complex
story in a slim volume, judiciously selecting editorial and
other comment to reflect the mood of the early 1930s and
guiding the reader through a maze of court and legal actions.

In the forefront are Tim Buck, the leader who followed
the Moscow line after,others had been expelled as devia-

There, unfortunately, the book ends abruptly. It seems
to ery out even for brief postscript on what happened to the
principals after 1982 — Buck, for instance, went under-
ground and died at 82 in Mexico; Carr was jailed on spy
charges growing out of the Igor Gouzenko inquiry.

Possibly Betcherman thinks that’s another story.
Maybe she'll write it some day.
