‘turned on Saturday afternoon after Dm Conservative Speakers Have a Hearty Reception. ALL ARE FOR MACKINTOSH Attempted Opposition by Martinites at Phoenix Proves a Boomerang— Exposure of Misrepre- sentation Brings Forth Cheers for the Gov- ernor—Grand Forks Is Solid. The party of Conservative speak- ers, composed of Mayor Goodeve, Dr. Bowes, D. B. Bogle and “Alex- ander Sharp, who went on a tour through the Boundary in the inter- est of Hon. C. H. Mackintosh, re- meeting with a favorable reception at every town where they spoke. In reviewing the trip, Mayor Goodeve said: “Our first meeting was at Grand Forks, where we had a splendid re- ception and a good meeting — The impression all around there is we must put in such a’ man ‘as’ Mr. Mackintosh, who understands the wants -of the district, and both Grand Forks and Columbia are very strongly in his favor. “The party’ then divided, Dr. Bowes and Mr. Bogle going to Eholt and Mr. Sharp and I to Phoe- nix. We had good meetings at both places and at Eholt there was no opposition whatever. At Phoe- nix a lawyer named Carr, who is a Martinite, asked leave to speak and was told that, as there was no op- position candidate in the field as yet and we were practically traveling for the purpose of organization, we did not invite’ speakers in opposi- tion, but we had no desire to hide anything and would be pleased to have speakers on the other side. Mr. Carr was accordingly given uv- limited time. His great argument was that Governor Mackintosh was coming out purely as a Conserva- tive and he took up the question from a Liberal standpoint, discuss- ing Dominion issues. He took up the attitude of Governor Mackintosh on the eight-hour question and had evidently been misinformed. It was easily shown that the governor’s at- titude on this question was more consistent and straightforward than Martin's, for I) showed that at the very time when Martin was unde- cided whether to enforce the law Governor Mackintosh wrote a letter to the Vancouver World stating that, as the Jaw was on the statute book, there was no alternative but to enforce it. Also when the crisis came in Rossland, Governor Mack- intosh wrote to the Miner urging that the miners and the mine-own- ers should come together, and de- claring that the latter should not stand with their backs against their money bags. A settlement was effected on the basis of the lines he recommended and is proving satis- factory. Although the meeting had been practically packed by Mr. Carr { TH | BOUNDARY IN LINE IE SULTANS NEW BPenles That STAND-OFF ie American Claimants Are Preferred Creditors: By Avsociated Press. Washington, April 23.—The state department ved through Llovd Griscom, the United States charge at Constantinople, the reply of the Turkish government to the latest representations of the United States touching the Ameri- has ree can missionaries’ clai It is gathered that the very brief outlines of the Turkish response cabled from Constantinople, to the effect that American claimants must take their position along with those of other nations, do not convey ac- curately the tenor of the whole note, though it is admitted that it does set out clearly dne portion of it. The opinion prevails in diplomatic circles here that, assuming that the Turkish government bas insisted on including the Americans’ claim with the others, it has played a diplo- matic card of some strength, as it places the United States in a posi- tion of seeking to extort better terms from the Turks than are to be accorded to the claimants of other nations. The state department* has deter- mined not to abandon the preferen- tial position respecting its claims that it has secured through the sul- tan’s own pro 5, soit is antici- pated that an energetic response to this last note will be sent to the porte through Mr. Griscom.
