Angus Macphee, secretary
of the Pulp, Paper and Wood-
workers of Canada at the
CanCel mill in Prince Rupert,
said this week a report by the
company on its sulphite oper-
ation was completely mislead-
ing. (See earlier story on front
page.) :

The company has an-
nounced the closure of | its
sulphite operation at Watson
Island with the laying-off of
about 826 workers.

According to the report,
the company is prepared to
spend up to $2 million to asalst
employees who will be laid off.

“It $2 million is spent, I'm
quite positive it's not going to
come out of the company's
pocket,” said Mr. Macphee.

~ He sald tho company. has
not talked to the union about
relocation allowances and he
said CanCel was probably re-
ferring to the federal govern-
ment's relocation program,
which is: only applicable to
workers in situations: where
new jobs are assured.

As for severance pay, Mr.
Macphee said, both the com-
pany and the union acknowl-
edge that 90 per cent of those
laid off have less than three
years’ service at the mill and 40
can expect little severance pay.

Mr. Macphee said sever-
ance pay for these workers
would amount toa maximum of
three weeks and only long-time
employees, those with 25 or
more years of service, could get
the six-month severance pay
announced by CanCel.

‘The majority of those laid
off would also be unable to take
advantage of the early retire-
ment provision, he said,
