Social Credit

VICTORIA (CP) — The
provincial government's {fi-
nance ministry has taken the
credit out of Social Credit.
From now on, all political
contributions must be paid in
cash or by cheque.

That was the word last
week from the finance minis-
try after officials discovered
the Social Credit party
appears to be breaking the
law by inviting supporters to
bill contributions to their
MasterCard or Visa credit
cards.

The Socreds have been
told to go back to the plastic-
money donors and tell them

The Social Credit party's
first pitch for contributions
by credit card is being made
in a door-to-door fund-raising
campaign, now being aimed
at 500,000 homes in the prov-
ince.

The problem, according to
a finance ministry official, is
that only politica! donations
of “cash or a negotiable con-
tribution” can be deducted
from income tax.

The official said the min
istry sought a legal opinion in
September from the attor-
ney-general’s ministry after a
newly formed political party
said it intended io accept
credit card donations.

The ruling: credit cards
are neither nor “
negotiable contribution.”

The news came as a sur-
prise to Bernie Smith, presi-
dent of the Social Credit
party. But after confirming
that a finance ministry of-
ficial had just called the
party's office, Smith made
clear he does not want a

“There's no way we want
to get into a hassle with
them,” Smith said in a tele-
phone interview. “We want
to make sure we stay
squeaky clean.”

Asa result, Smith has told
party workers not to accept
any more donations by credit
card. The few donations of
that kind already received
