Flight-Out. “Good id ‘Taras’ was strict but honest “My father was a simple man — strict but honest. For him a man’s handshake was his bond and he brought us up in the same way.” Some while ago Ron Miscavitch and I spent an. afternoon and evening talking about his memories as a boy and about his father, Tom Miscavitch, as most people knew him, or “Taras” as Mr. Zuckerberg — always the trad- itionalist — called him, or “Mr. Miscavitch,” as I, the formalist, spoke to him. In any case his story is the story of many a central European immigrant and their families who made Canada their homes in the earlier days. “ Tom was born in 1890 near Omsk, in that part of the Ukraine known as Belorussia or White Russia and emigrated in 1910 to Canada via Halifax staying for a while in a boarding house there (what, by the way, has happened to boarding houses?). He then moved to the prairies, working as a farm hand in Saskatchewan and Alberta. When World War I broke out he was working in the mines at Fernie and East Kootenays. Here, he earned his miner's ticket and helped in the rescue of trapped, dead and injured miners after one of the great ., mine explosions — “an arm here and a leg there,” Ron recalls him saying. “It was terrible but we saved many men.” He was still a bachelor when he went to work in the woods near Cranbrook and he used the bachelor woodsman's method of “altering” dangerously long‘pant-legs — put them on a stump and “stagger” them (lop them off) with an-axe. When he moved to Trail to work for the CM and 8 he again stayed at a boarding house, this time operated by Mike amd Mary Turik — a well-known oldtime family in the area. Here he met Anne Stoopnikoff who worked as a waitress for the Turiks. The couple was married in 1922 — a buggy with two black horses, Anne recalls, and a Ukranian-style wedding where each man who danced with the bride pinned a gift of money to her wedding gown. In 1927 Tom and Anne with their children Nellie and Andy came to Castlegar and bought from Fred Eremenko the block of 12 acres of land which lies along 7th Ave. overlooking Zuckerberg Island and the Columbia River. “It was a jungle,” Mrs. Mascavitch recalls, “and the family cleared it for pasture and garden with only saws, and axes, a horse and stoneboat and strong backs. It was very hard work.” Tom worked at Waldie’s mill — 10 hours a day and six days a week in those days — cutting and sawing shingle bolts. They first lived in a log house until 1985 when a carpenter built the shell of the present shingle-sided house for $65 (!) and Mrs, Miscavitch put on the shingles. “There was never any lack of work,” Ron recalls. “When haying time came around everyone got into the act — Lil and Mom raking, John and Dad throwing the hay up into the wagon and me tamping it down. By this time Nick, Andy and Nellie have already served their apprenticeship, were away from home.” The family prepared the land and it in turn — as it-has- done for countless generations — kept the family, “I canned 300 quarts of tomatoes every year,” .said.. .. “Anne, “as well as fruit, pickles, vegetables, a calf and many chickens.” The river also added to the store fish for fun and He said it was important to get it there fast.
