But for more and more private investors who own a personal computer, this daily ritual has changed radically. Now they can go to their computer printer and tear off a sheet of paper to get an updated of thei use grows compared to 2,000 three years ago, “and we are.getting between 1,400 and 1,700 new customers a month.” Dow Jones is the only data bank offering Canadian market quotes, but both it and Compuserve can be reached through local phone numbers in major Canadian cities. Both companies say their Canadian business is flourishing, although they are unable to provide exact figures. ACCESS COSTS Access to data banks usually costs between $1.60 and ; portfolio, including an estimate of the loss they would suffer or the profit they would make if they sold their holdings. During the night, the computer automatically dials one of the growing number of financial data banks on an ordinary phone line, selects the desired quotations, calculates the total gain or loss and prints up the good or bad news. The bill for more extensive searches runs from $9 to $20. “Uusally, the amateur investor calls in once a day, but the fanatics will very often do it twice a day,” says Minot. Dow Jones and Compuserve, complementing their data banks, sell off-the-shelf that gional will go toward the venture's estimated $2.7-million cost, Industry Minister Ed Lumley said in a news release. The floppy disks, or dis- kettes, are high-speed mag- netic data storage devices for pected to hit the market next summer. Didak, which will build its new plant in Arnprior, Ont., about 50 kilometres west of Ottawa, will initially produce eight-inch (20.3-centimetre) and 5%-inch (18.8-centi- metre) diskettes. The company, which hopes for sales in Canada of more than $7 million a year by 1986, also expects to produce microdiskettes of less than ‘four inches (10.1 centimetres) when standards for them ' have been established. . STEAL MANY TOP SE! Steel union head dies PITTSBURGH (AP) — Lloyd McBride, who com- bined caustic wit and iron dedication in six years as president of the United Steel- workers union, has died at age 67, leaving no heir ap- parent to his labor throne. McBride's death Sunday created an internal challenge with no relief from shifting economic forces that threat- en to steal the union's in- fluence’ and its members’ jobs. “Let's just say I've got a big knot in my stomach,” said one executive board member as he contemplated the nam- ing and the administration of nominations and elections. “Everybody in this union has got to be wondering about what direction we're going to take now,” he said Sunday on condition he not be named. PRAISES McBRIDE McBride, who had under- gone heart bypass surgery Oct. 18, was found dead at 7 am. Sunday by his wife, Delores, in their suburban Whitehall home, said union spokesman Russell Gibbons. “He will be remembered for his strong stand in de- fence of his members’ posi- tions at a time of special challenge to the steel indus- try," said Lane Kirland, president of the AFL-CIO. “Lloyd McBride was one of the most outstanding labor leaders in America's history, and the country will miss his responsible leadership,” said David Roderick, chairman of U.S. Steel Corp.: and Mc- Bride's adversary on contract concessions and-most recent- ly on steel imports. “He had a very caustic, very biting sense of humor,” said Ben Fischer, director of the Centre for Labor Studies at Carnegie-Mellon Univer- sity, who had worked as Me- Bride's assistant.
