He lives in that car. Out in the morning, home late at night. Then he sits in front of that stupid TV set watching sports all the time, I asked him one night, ‘Don't you have any work to bring home from the office?’ He said he didn't but I know better.” “Have your parents talked about getting their own apart- ment?" “That's all they talk about, If Mom had to do her own dishes every night and Dud had to take out the garbage, they'd « be-home in two days,” “I don't: know 4°.) mine never seem to want lo’ go anywhere with us anymore.” “Maybe we nagged ‘em too much. Maybe we left ‘em alone too much?” “That's no excuse for their making a life of their own.” “Tell me, if you had it todo all over again, would you have parents?” “Maybe just one — after : all, they do look adorable on a Christmas card.” 900 Attend Dec. 30-31 JW Gathering in Trail Jehovah's Witnesses Release As the year 1978 came toa close, about 900 Jehovah's Wit- nesses gathered together in Trail at the Cominco Gym, Dec. 80 and 31, The Trail Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses-hosted the two-day convention. The program theme was “Rendering Sacred Service With Loyalty" based on Luke 1st chapter verses 74 and 75. Serving Jehovah is not merely a formalistie worship for Je- hovah's Witnesses; it is a way of life affecting everything they do. Loyalty to Jehovah will move anyone lo serve Jehovah all their days, Accidents Increase in Cold Weather Reduce Winter Mishaps Dangerous and difficult — :that is winter driving. : Accidents increase at an ‘alarming rate during the cold ‘season because many drivers fail to recognize the increased driving hazards created by ‘sleet, fog, ice and snow. They do not adjust their driving Jechniques to handle the xhanged conditions safely. There are ways to reduce chances of having an accident by following these tips on bad weather driving: ‘ @ Have your car ready for winter before the temperature §tarts to drop. Not just an oil thange and an antifreeze check, but go all the way with a complete tune-up and inspec- tion. : You need a hot battery for cold morning starts. Get a charge, or maybe it's time for a new battery. ‘e Check your tires. Regu- ie tires should have a good treat for the bite you need in snow and ice. If you use snow tires, put them on with the first Snowfall warning. You get the best traction from studded tires, Studded tires can be legally used in B.C. from Oct. 1 to April 30 of the next year. Keep chains in the trunk. { e Be sure to have your entire exhaust system checked for leaks. Carbon monoxide is a killer and even a small leak in the system could pave the way to disaster. ¢ Have your brakes check- ed and serviced if necessary. Equalized braking on all wheels is vital to avoid a skid on slippery roads. { «© Be sure to carry emer- wency safety gear: glass s¢raper-brush, booster cables, hovel, sand or rock salt, strap or cable, extra wind- ld washer fluid. > Hazards are all around u, you have toSEE danger to Y Clean off the entire windshield, all the windows — no “peephole” driving. Don't forgit headlights and tail-lights. Kyep lights on low beam in fog ot heavy snowfall. Switch on lights in the daytime too if isibility is poor. + Run your heater and de- froster a few minutes before you start out on cald mornings. That way you will prevent sudden fogging of windshield glass that could blind you. : Skill and good judgment are musts on icy or snow covered roads. Keep speed down and try to anticipate stops — yours and the traffic ahpad. Remember that inter- settions might be extra slick hebause of the polishing effect of stopping and starting traffic. Slow down gradually. Hard, sudden braking can lock your brakes and throw you into a skid. Increase your following distance, In traffic it is the extras that count — extra time and extra space. You need both to make a safe stop on winter roads, If you do get stuck try these tactics to get going again. Don't gun it. Spinning your wheels will just dig you in deeper. Turn your front wheels from side to side to clear the snow away. Then, in high gear, ease forward gently. Some- times a rocking motion — alter- nately shifting from forward to reverse — will provide the way out. Check your owner's man- ual for advice on this maneuver since it could cause costly trans- mission damage. You might get the traction you need by putting rock salt, sand or a piece of carpeting under the wheels — all good items to stash in the trunk before snow time. It is a myth that reducing lire pressure in- creases traction — it only creates wear on the tires. Keep your speed down, steer steadily keep a safe following di .ance and avoid sudden chi iges of direction. This is the safe way. Part of the program was a reviewing of the history of the Theocratic Schoo! since its inauguration in 1948. Within two years this school produced eapable public speakers, and in the past 35 years, over two million Jehovah's Witnesses have been assisted in their door-to-door evangelizing work, It currently operates in every congregation of Jeho- vah's Witnesses worldwide, fea- turing a Bible reading program, written reviews, and personal counsel to each student. Guest speakers included Larry Gray of Toronto, who delivered the key public ad- dress Sunday on the subject, “Meeting The Test of Christian Loyalty.” David Waterer, also of Toronto, but working in the West Kootenay area among congregations of Jehovah's Wit- nesses, spoke on the subject, “Are You Thinking God's Thoughts?” Many local Witnesses ap- peared on the program, and a special part was presented by young persons on the theme “Serving Loyalty in’ Youth.” A Dedication and Baptism talk was part of Saturday morning's program, followed by a complete water immersion of new candidates. pie~ TT”. / Consumer Comment See us for... Every time we ‘turn around, it seems someone's asking us about something. If they're not enquiring about our soft drink preferences or the brand of soup we buy, they're wondering which is our favorite television show and how often we watch it. All this attention can be enjoyable at times. After all, it's nice to know someone wants our opinion on something. The problem is that mixed in with the legitimate pollsters and survey-takers are a few flim- flam artists and outright crooks. You are under no obli- gation to answer questions from survey-takers, and you should be careful what informa- tion you give to that stranger on the other end of the line. Even answering innocent- sounding questions like “are you watching television at the moment?" can let you in for trouble. With this, and one or two supplementary questions, someone posing as a TV ratings ° surveyor can tell not only that you have a TV set, but also establish whether it's color or black-and-white, new or old, portable or console — in short, ifa trip to your house to steal it would be worthwhile. Other telephone frauds in- clude contests which are really just a come-on to get you to buy something. ‘(Voice of the People / Wrong Impressions Editor, Castlegar News: Tam distressed over the bad press our good Doukhobor friends have been receiving since the recent a thorough investigation of harassment against them ig- nored by the government. Yet these same friends know all against Mr. Verigin and his consequent arrest, Thave found the provincial and national media coverage to have resurrected prejudice and misunderstanding against the Doukhobor people. I know some friends of mine from outside this area have asked me what “those Doukhobors are up to” and have been surprised to know that the Union of Spiri- tual Communities of Christ has had its reasonable requests for about the made in Nelson by convicted arsonists. Thave written my Church's national magazine, hoping ‘to correct, for a few people, the wrong impressions they may have received from the media. 1 would hope that many of us, as individuals and through organizations we belong to, would find ways of doing some- thing similar to correct this injustice against our friends and neighbors. Ted Bristow “Name the highest moun- tain in B.C, and win 10 free dance lessons — oh sorry, that’s not the right answer — tell you what, we'll give you the lessons. anyway as a consolation prize. To get your 10 free lessons, all have have to do is pay for the first hundred at $10 each. You say you're 94 years old? Don't let that stop you — never too old, you know.” The best response to this kind of con game is to hang up.
