Call 365-5161 of less of new price (ports) A celebration was held in the Winlaw Community Hall recently to mark the 50th wedding anniversary of Arvid and Yvette Swanson. Open house was well-attended in the afternoon from 2-5 p.m. The banquet at 6 p.m. was enjoyed by 120 guests and was catered by the couple's nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters and close friends. The organizing of the occasion was headed by nieces Nellie Stach and Joan Willford. An anniversary cake, made and decorated by Pat Simmons of Slocan, was presented to the couple. Master of ceremonies for the evening was Sam Olynyk of Revelstoke. A number of guests recalled many humorous incidents which occurred in the lives of Mr. and Father F. Monaghan said grace and also spoke of his 50-year friendship with the Swansons. Later in the evening, dancing was enjoyed to the music provided by the Swanson brothers and sisters: Arvid, George, Nellie and Clara. Also joining them were Percy and Isabel Cutler and Doug Strand. During the 1930s the Swanson orchestra played at many dances in the Winlaw area. Being musically reunited brought back fond memories. Yvette and Arvid were married in her parents’ home in Crescent Valley on the Bourgeois ranch on Oct. 12, 1935. They homesteaded in Paradise Valley near Winlaw where Arvid had built a long house during the summer of 1935. In 1942 he dismantled reconstructed it on their property in the village of Winlaw, later remodelling and building an extension. It is the home in which they presently reside. Yvette was an elementary teacher in Winlaw from 1929-1935. When war was declared, she was recalled for one year at Pass Creek and then returned to Winlaw for three years. A number of her former pupils attended the anniversary party. Arvid was a self-employed mechanic for 27 years until his retirement in 1973. It was a unique and friendly business venture. Besides being occupied six days a week repairing vehicles, he often made time to drive someone to the doctor in Nelson in an emergency, as few people had transportation. Yvette kept the records for the business in a corner of her kitchen. When customers had to wait until their vehicles were repaired or came in to pay the account they would invariably stay to visit over a cup of coffee. Guests for the celebration came from High River, Meadow Creek, Cranbrook, Revelstoke, Penticton, Kelowna, Kamloops, Brookmere, Trail, Rossland, Castlegar, Nelson and many points in the Alta., Langley, Kaslo, Slocan Valley. the log house and Looking for a Great Deal? Phone 365-6471 5-7 p.m. New system for library Starting in early February, the David Thompson Library will make materials available to the public by means of a direct circulation system. Library administrators, staff and volunteers have long been aware that the inter-library loan system which has been in effect as an operational necessity since late 1984 has limited public access to the materials, ac- cording to a prepared re- lease. In October 1985 library staff estimated that 20 to 30 per cent of request for books were not followed through by the borrowers. The inter-library loan sys tem came into being largely as a result of concern for the safety of the books in a time of uncertainty about the li- brary’s future. At this point the library's staff and volunteers have ar- ranged for all the necessary physical improvements to the facility, including construc. tion of access for the handi. capped, consistent with rea sonable expectations of a public service. Library personnel now have a year’s experience in dealing with the cataloguing system and have improved knowledge of the actual col lections held, which are both large and diverse. At a Jan. 20 general meet. ing of volunteers and staff proposals for direct circula tion which have been con sidered for some time re. ceived final approval as the most significant way of im proving the quality of library service to the public at this time. “Continued funding for the library now presents the only impediment to full “normali zation” of services in the months ahead,” says the re lease. The library's federal MILAP funding expires March 31, and although appli cation has been made for further grants for financial support to March 1987, li brary staff say they cannot know for certain if there will be full-time staff after this March. If such support does not materialize, the library will carry on, but strictly on a volunteer basis,” the release notes. The library's direct lending hours will be Tuesday, Fri day and Sunday afternoons, and Wednesday mornings, and will remain in force as long as is feasible. Existing interlibrary loan agreements with the Nelson Municipal Library, L.V.R. and Mount Sentinel High Schools will not be affected.
