Saturday July 4, 1992 Castleview snubbed by government Mi Health Minister Cull says no to the Castleview Care Centre Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER There’s no cash in the coffers for the Castleview Care Centre. According to Health Minister Elizabeth Cull, the extended-care facility will not be receiving money needed to open the 25 beds currently closed. Liberal Health Critic Linda Reid, who visited Castlegar’s care centre May 12, used Tuesday’s question period to asked Cull “what is the basis — and I believe the decision has been made — to refuse funding for new beds at the Castleview Care Centre?” Cull’s response was a blow to both the facility and Castlegar citizens in need of extended care. “My understanding is that the owner of the facility was expecting to get some private-care patients, so they undertook an expansion,” Cull replied. “The patients didn’t materialize, and now they want the government to fund those beds. “Unfortunately they’re not high enough on our priority list for funding this year.” Although Cull’s comments were made public Tuesday, the Castleview Care Centre hasn’t been told the status of its funding request. “We still haven’t heard if we will be getting our funding,” said Laura Cullen, a representative with the Chantelle Management Ltd. — Castleview’s owners.“In light of what’s going on in health care these days, I really don’t know if we'll be opening any of the beds.” The government’s decision comes at a bad time for Castlegar. According to Cullen, Castlegar is struggling to keep up a growing demand for extended care. Cullen said the current waiting period for a bed at the Castleview Care Centre is “about two years.” Since Castleview opened in May 1991, an entire wing in the 60-bed facility has remained empty. That wing contains some 25 beds.
